Last saturday I finally got my new 15% alta pulley installed. during installation my father in law noticed my mini was leaking power steering fluid and i had a split open driver front cv boot. so I called my local mini dealer and set an appointment for today. my wife and I got there this morning at 8:00am and I also included a much needed tire rotation and an alignment (pulling slightly to the right) to the repair order. Our service advisor Jason was great. He kept us informed throughout the day and was very friendly.
My wife was so impressed that we spoke to Steve, one of the salesman. We talked numbers and I think my wife finally decided on a pepper white/black mcsa.
Anyway, about 4:00pm rolled around and my wife and I stepped outside to have a smoke (dont hate us) and we seen the tech take off and tear out of the parking lot in MY MINI!!!
so we stayed outside to watch him come back, thinking that it was an accident. No accident! He gets back to the parking lot and tears by us and squeals the tires and barely misses a parked bmw.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GUY DOING!!! Is it really necessary to do that in MY MINI after replacing a p/s pump, cooling fan, cv boot, performing a tire rotation and an alignment? I DONT THINK SO!
So we go inside and tell Jason what we just witnessed. I was so angry that I went back outside just as MY MINI was being pulled back up. I walked around MY MINI to check him out (i could hear him crying "what did that man just do to me?
) so being a service advisor that I AM, I got down on the ground and put my hand on the driver front cv boot and what did I feel, GREASE!!! a new cv boot does not have grease on the outside of it. so I took my greasy hand into the service advisor and asked him if the tech really did replace the cv boot. He calls and talks to the tech and now the tech is telling him, "no the cv boot was not replaced but I cleaned it up." cleaned what up? there was grease all over the cv boot and axle. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???
Did this tech come from Billy Bob's Taco Stand and Auto Repair? The tech told Jason that the power steering fluid that was leaking was what I was actually feeling on the cv boot. again I ask Billy Bob's Taco Stand and Auto Repair. Anyone with a half of a brain would know the difference between fluid and grease. Anyway then the tech told Jason that he ordered a new cv boot and it will be in in a couple of days. Now wait a minute. The tech JUST said that it was p/s fluid that I was feeling not grease.
Jason apologizes for everything that has happened and I pay my bill and leave.
My wife and I get out onto the highway and I notice my steering wheel is not centered, its turned to the left. so I let go of the steering wheel thinking that its just the road. when I let go I go straight (yeah!), but my steering wheel is still turned to the left. When I attempt to center my steering wheel MY MINI sharply cuts right.
so I call Jason and tell him what is going on and he offers to accomidate me by having someone bring me a loaner and pick MY MINI up. I tell him I appreciate the offer but after what my wife and I witnessed earlier I declined the offer. I told him just to call me when the new cv boot comes in and then we will figure something out.
On our way home, my wife tells me that she doesnt think she wants a mini anymore and I ask her why and she tells me because she cant trust the techs to work on it after what we just went through (sorry steve
). I completely understand. Salesmen sell the cars, but service keeps the customers coming back.
We have NOT had, I repeat, we have NOT had one bad experience with the sales staff, especially Steve. we just continue to have issues with the service. like I said, Jason was great and did everything he could to ease the tension, but our previous experience was not with him but the other advisor, Kim. We were lied to about what was and what was not replaced. I had the steering column replaced and I had a grinding noise coming from the driver front side. The advisor told me that the serpentine belt was causing my grinding noise. I questioned that and she stuck to her story. I received the paperwork when I noticed that it was the driver rear wheel hub that was replaced and not the serpentine belt (
grinding noise is still present
). I also noticed on my newly replaced steering column, that a hole had been punched through it with a screwdriver and i was never told about it.
I just dont know what to do anymore. do I have to babysit the tech everytime he works on MY MINI, or do I go to baron mini in kc and have a QUAILIFIED tech work on it and DO IT RIGHT? I will be calling the general manager on monday and let him know what we witnessed during the techs test drive. I feel that he should know what his techs do during test drives. im not looking for any free stuff or free work, I just want MY MINI fixed right the first time. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

Absolutely not. But, this is a problem with either techs in a rush, techs who just don't care or service that has no control over said techs. I know at my work there is a pretty tight leash on everyone because of problems like yours possibly happening. They have the radios off, seats don't get moved, and anything in the car that doesn't have to be moved, isn't. Talk to theGM and hopefully he'll be able to straighten it out. If not, forget this place all together and find a new MINI dealer to go to. Maybe a certified tech will have a better head on his shoulders.
the tech shouldnt have been in a rush. we were there at 8:00 am and my mini was finally finished at 4:00 pm. i also forgot to mention the radio (thanks for bringing that up
) the radio was on a different channel and blaring loud. i think that i am going to have to go to kc for any and all warranty and customer pay work. im just fed up.
It sounds like you possible either got one the dreaded "It's not my car therefore I don't care techs" or he was having one hell of a bad day. As far as the old advisor, there are a lot of stupid people working as service advisors. Believe me, there's one or 2 jackasses working at my place I could just punch him the head. My theory is that to be either a parts person or a service advisor, you should have a minimum of a year as a tech/mechanic. This way you're not reading a paragraph frpm a book but can actually explain things in detail to your customers. Listen to an advisor who either has done service work or at least does their own compared to someone who doesn't. There's a big difference.

My bet is that MINIUSA doesn't care. I had a similarly horrific experience (several of them actualy) with Desert BMW. This is the same BMW that owns MINI. I bought my MINI AND my BMW there.
Anyway, after spending 100 grand on cars there they literally called me names and threatened me physically, all because I politely refused to pay for warranty repair they had mistakenly tried to charge me for.
I spoke with a representative from BMWUSA who told me they'd get back with me, but never did. The truth is they don't care. BMW makes great cars but their dealerships SUCK and I will never buy another BMW product. I just traded my BMW in for a 2008 Honda.
Truth is, the only thing you should hope to gain from the GM is a fired service technician and some free repair. Anything short of that is lip service and the unpleasantness WILL continue.
Anything short of that, and you need to take your baby elsewhere. I speak from experience.

My dealership thoughts go like this: The bigger, more widespread the dealership, the better the chance they will suck ***. A lot of them get this "If you don't like it, there will always be 10 people behind you who will deal with it" attitude. That's what kills me. I worked for a big Volvo dealer, 3 locations. Service was a good group of people, all very polite and educated in cars. Parts, that was a bit of a different story. Then I worked PT for a Subie dealer, best dealership experience I had. Only 2 writers, they knew justabout all of the customers. Parts guy was cool, there was maybe 5 or 6 salesman. It was a small place so it was tight knit. That, and they were the only Subie dealer for about 25 miles. They went out of their way toplease their customers and they did a damn fine job at it. I now work at a big Toyota dealer that sucks. Way too many people and too much of that "If we lose your business, oh well" attitude. Service writers there are dumb as hell, some techs even ask questions I'm honestly suprised they don't know the answer to.
i too work for a small dealership and it has been the best experience. i worked for a big gm dealer and for vw and so far saturn has been the best. there is 1 service manager, 1 advisor, 1 parts guy, 4 techs and maybe 6 salesmen. great place to work
. i dont think i will send this thread to miniusa, but i will definately talk to the gm at markel bmw/mini/jaguar/landrover and let him know what happened. im not looking to get someone fired or free stuff/work, i just think that he needs to know what took place. baron mini was great. thats where i got turkish in the first place.
Why can't all dealers be like Honda dealers. I've had 7 Hondas in the last 10 and other than just a compressor going out, I've never had any other problems. That is with the cars and/or service tech. Every time I deal with Mini dealers, I feel like I have been taken advantage of.
I had a guy light up the tires infront of me in my classic corvette. My uncle bought the car brand new and its my first car.
Ive never been that angry before.
I calmly explained what had happened and the tires that were to be mounted and balanced
were free.
Its never happened again.
Personaly I would talk to the Gm
But if that dose not get you anywhere. Go to KC
its honestly worth the drive if the service is better.
Oh and good luck

i am strongly considering making the drive to kc even though it is a 6 total hours down and back. my father in law thinks that we should open our own mini shop in lincoln.
i would love that. i know he is a very, very experienced tech. we should do it.
Nice to see another Statham fan out there....

BTW, I live in L.A., but my favorite tech owns his own shop in Florida. I usually drive there once a year and he does all the work on my MCS.
Great....
Now I know what I have to look forward to when I take mine in for service...I got the feeling that the Markel group was a little shady.
First I felt like was being treated like an uninformed consumer idiot during the sales process, and now I get to look forward to a bad service experience??!?!?!
I absolutely enjoy every minute of my motoring experience with this car, but I am beginning to get very leery of a long term relationship, if this is what I have to look forward to.

i would love to open an independant mini shop here in lincoln. we would not be able to do warranty work, but we could do pulleys, oil changes, tire rotations, intakes, and other types of work. maybe we should persue this and see how it goes.
i did speak to the gm (tony) at markel today. i told him what my wife and i witnessed and he sounded very upset. he told me that once he got back to the office, he would have a little meeting with the tech and try to figure out why he did what he did. i did find out that the tech that worked on my mini was some young kid that has only been there a short while. anyway tony said when i come back to get the cv boot replaced and the alignment fixed, to let him know and he'll take care of me and make sure that my mini is fixed right. so we will see how it all pans out.
Good luck. It seems that crappy service abounds in MINI dealerships, no matter where.
Take a look in my gallery...that's what my local MINI service people foisted on me.
If you want, I have a number of a rep at MINIUSA...it's not the 800#, but rather the number of a real person...assuming he's still there.
PM me if you like, and I'll give it to you.

There is little reason for the tech to have been driving so agressively, but perhaps it's their standard practice to illuminate any other potential issues with the car... ones that you might not have even noticed.
Lying in any way, shape, or form to a customer is intolerable and he deserves to be hung out to dry on that.
On the first generation MINIs, you have to put a tiny hole in the steering wheel plastic to get the wheel off of the car... which MIGHT explain that hole on your wheel. See threads about installing the JCW steering wheel to see if your hole is in the right place.

It doesn't have to be written like a college English paper, but it certainly makes it easier to read when it's not just one giant sentence going on and on and on.
This is exactly why I don't get my car serviced at MINI. I've never had anything done under warranty on my car, I pay out of pocket. It's not worth wasting my time at the dealership for stupid crap. They wanted my car for a week to replace the power window motor. I bought one at another dealership and installed it with a friend in 25 minutes.
