HOTROD Magazine dogging MINI Cooper
HOTROD Magazine ******* MINI Cooper
I was reading my new issue of HOTROD today and AMC is getting back into the car business. One of the models they are bringing back is the Pacer. I believe this was the car from Wayne's World.
They go on to say in the caption of a concept drawing: "What's surprising is how easily the Pacer could be modernized. This car is slightly downsized so as to compete with the Mini Cooper, but it won't be as small. The performance and handling outclass the Cooper with the bonus of getting great fuel efficiency."
Are you kidding me? Outclass the Cooper? I say we flood there email box.

Even mentioning a Pacer in the same breath with a Mini is just BS... The Pacer belongs in the POS pile of automotive history along with Pintos and Chevettes.... Polish a turd all ya want and it's still a turd...

Maybe they're being sarcastic?
I remember the Pacer being nicknamed a "greenhouse on a rollerskate." I just cannot imagine WHY they would want to bring that car back. To compare the Pacer to a MINI that has a great heritage is not even close.
If and when the Pacer does come out and you want to see the head of a MA explode in the MINI dealership, you would say, "Hey thanks for the test drive of the MINI, but I really want to test drive the Pacer just one more time before I place an order."
I wonder when the Pacer group will have their annual event on The Dragon. HA!

AMC cars, were, IMHO the worst built US cars. Every friend of mine with a Pacer, Gremlin, or whatever, always had problems with them. The cars literally self-destructed after a few years. And AMC? Well, it self-destructed after a few years too! I think it is fair to say that there is no American car that competes with a MINI. Even the Japanese cars don't really compete... you can't say that a Toyota Yaris handles anything like a MINI. Funny article though!
how could a drawing/prototype/concept compete. most of that crap won't make it to production. take the ford fivehundred. that was supposed to be based on the tbird chasis with a full sunroof top and it became a bloated taurus with deflated muscles
I suppose that if a modern Pacer were built with RWD, a 250 hp turbo, and weighed 2500 lbs, then it would certainly outclass a Cooper in handling, performance, and possibly even fuel economy. As it's all speculation (or a joke), though, I'm not bothered by their comments.
It's not as if they are saying that the old Pacer would kick a modern Cooper's butt, so I don't know why people are feeling slighted. But even if they did bring a modern one like that to market, it would force MINI to improve, as well as offer another great alternative to us enthusiasts.
