Radar Detectors

What's everyone using, and how has it worked for you?

I have a OLD Cincanatti Microwave Passport. I think it was the first radar detector made.

I used it on my drive from Utah to Colorado when I picked up my Mini. It picked up some local police, but didn't make a sound when the highway patrol was out. I guess they were using Laser or another band, so I guess it might be time to upgrade.

Ideas?

Hopefully thats of some interest to you. I can recommend the V1 up and down for the majority of people, some however I recommend the upper end passports depend upon type of usage. Unfortunately lidar jammers are not an option in CO if thats what is being used. However the V1 has given short but advanced warning (enough for me to adjust my speed and call it a "save") with lidar a few times.

I've used Escort's for several years and just got a new 9500i and it's the best one yet. The new one has GPS and even tells your speed when it alarms.

RX65

People here seem passionate about their Valentine detectors. If I were buying one today I would definitely include them in my research.

I've been using a Beltronics Pro RX65 for two years, and it does a good job. It has a voice to tell you what type of radar (K band, ka band, POP, etc).

It can auto-mute and there's a manual mute control at the AC plug (called the "Smartplug").

It seems to do well in field tests against other detectors, even now after two years.

I'm no speed demon, but it's good to have a few seconds to react. I'm sure I've saved the cost of the unit a few times over.

I'm starting to think about hardwiring it in my MCS.

Larry

My vote would be V1... Made 2 trips from Ca to Wa last summer, one in a MINI and one in a new 335i. V1 made several saves on both trips. Range is incredible for both front and rear detection. Their units are upgradeable. I have never had any problems with their customer service.

I'm looking into getting a V1 soon. Can anyone tell me if I buy a V1 from the Valentine website - here: https://store.valentine1.com/store/ if it will come with POP2 protection or is this an upgrade? I can't tell from the site if it's included. I know the latest version is 1.8, but other sites that sell the V1 say V1 1.8 "with POP2" like it's a separate thing.

You said that in another thread as well. Didn't go into detail there either. :impatient

Be sure to save the original box you get it in so when you want to get an upgrade, you'll already have the packaging to mail it back.

I've also got a Beltronics RX65 which has worked very well for me. I considered the V1, but ultimately found that the price premium wasn't worth it to me for the additional functionality. Here's some interesting reading on the subject:

I'm definitely not a Valentine hater -- it's a fantastic piece of equipment, but there are other worthy choices out there.

I've found that site tends to be out dated and heavily bias to those products which they sell (and is consequently very misleading on many points). Here is a link to a good forum, where the radar dectector question is about as popular as the which mod is best question is here on NAM.

That's a fair point. That site came up when I did a quick search on the Bel RX65 and Valentine. There's no doubt that this is a hotly contested subject.

I'm just trying to convey that it's not quite as simple as V1...case closed. There are a few really good products out there that are worthy of consideration.

I agree as I mentioned before, if Jay could give us some more information it would be much easier to give him the most beneficial information for his situation. There's options out there, I recommend them to the user based on how they use plan to it.

I just picked up a Passport 8500 this past weekend, and so far it has worked quite well. It alerted me to a patrol who wasn't even facing my direction and was at the time driving out of a Wal-Mart parking lot about 100m away. I was seriously considering the V1, but decided to save myself the extra $100 and get one just as worthy, IMHO. I live in Arkansas anyway, and the patrols in the places I drive (not that I drive crazily or anything!) don't use the most up-to-date equipment.
