Bright Colors & Stripes = Target for Police?
Bright Colors & Stripes = Target for Police?
Do you think a bright color Mini with stripes make them more of a target for police? I have always heard that red cars get pulled more than other colors. After years of driving white and silver autos - SUV, Minivan, and Subaru Wagon I am now thinking about a Laser Blue Mini with a white top and stripes. I typically drive 5-10 miles over the posted speed limits with no problems, but I wonder if I drive a Mini in this same fashion will I be more likely to get ticketed by police because of the car? I have gone over 20 years without a speeding ticket.
I have also considered the PW and PS mini, but now I am thinking a color like laser blue would be fun for a change. I can't belive how many times I have changed my thought on colors and options for a Mini.

Cars that speed... those are the ones that get pulled over the most.
I really don't think colors matter. Hopefully by now cops realize that because a car is red, doesn't mean it's fast or the person driving it thinks it is a sports car...

Color does not really matter to me!
Its what my Radar or Laser says that makes people unhappy!
I do think that people who drive fast on a regular basis choose red vehicles though. just my .02. After all I drive a Laser Blue
Cooper S and Love it. Hope this helps.
P.S. I have stripes!

Agreed...don't speed and you'll be fine. Why in the world we think all MINI owners have to drive so freakin' fast all the time is beyond me. It's just a MINI, for pete's sake....motor and have fun. Then you can get any color you like!!!
It is less what you are driving and more how you drive it. There is a guy in our club who had some bad luck with the Law and he earned his MINI a nickname. It happens to be British Racing Green.

Love ya Jeff!

actually, i remember reading in a study somewhere that in the long run (over the course of 5 to 7 years) red and yellow cars tend to be pulled more so than white or silver cars. it's a combination of multiple things, such as the color that is more eye catching, and psychological reason. also people may tend to be more biased upon things. i know for me, if i see 2 enzos, a red and a black one, i'd automatically think the red one is "speed", it's just how your brain is programmed ever since childhood.

20/20 did a report about this. After reviewing ticket records of many states over many years, they did not find that Red cars were/are pulled over more then any other color. My MINI is my 1st red ride ever and I have not been pulled over more because of it. Buy radar and don't be the fastest one out there. My Garmin has also helped me slow down with it's eta feature, buy one of them too.
oh also, i remember a passage in a book i've read two years ago for class, i think it's called Blink, but in that study it shows, different colors effect mood, they proved that the color gray makes people feel "old, slow or depressed" where orange makes people feel "energized" there's also some states where insurance costs a bit more if your car is red or yellow too.

Two silver Mustangs and a white Chrysler Sebring: pulled over 3 or 4 times
Dark Red Sebring: never pulled over
Hot Orange MINI: never pulled over
As a former police officer, in my experience no one (or two) colors were more likely to be pulled over than other colors.

Fashion Police: Sir, do you know why I've pulled you over? You have gaudy vinyl graphics over your paint and an over-sized, non-functional rear wing. Not what we would call "fabulous".
You: I'm very sorry officer.

I got pulled over a few times (74 and 73 in a 55) in my bright red Alero, only got one ticket (luck ran out - 60 in a 55).
Haven't had a run in with The Law in Lewis yet (BRG w/ big while lightning bolts).

Aww sorry to hear that ML. I thought you said you drive like a Grandma....lololol
I was doing 54 in a 50 zone by the airport this week. I had just I dropped my son off at preschool, and no less than 2 minutes into the drive, I picked up a laser warning blip on my Valentine. I looked around and figured it was the black SUV that just zipped by me--Infiniti SUV's always set the laser warning off. I kept going, and about a minute later, another laser blip, and no one was around but me.
Way off ahead--maybe 1/2 mile up, I saw something black on the side of the road--you guessed it--a motorcycle cop was lasering me. I let off the gas and slowed back down to 50, and noticed a light blue silverish car was gaining on me--she had also pulled out of the same lot that I had dropped my son off at just moments earlier.
As I passed the cop, he put the gun away, slipped on his gloves, and casually got on his bike like he was out for a Sunday drive---no rush, no lights or anything. He just cruised behind us. I pulled over one lane so we weren't all in the same lane, and he didn't follow, so that was good. We went a few blocks and on went his siren and lights--for the girl that was behind me.
Thank god for my Valentine. As a sidenote, the other evening I was driving beside a Honda that had a large digital speedo that I could see--and we were cruising at the same speed, but my speedo read about 2MPH more than his although we were side by side and not gaining. I'm running 17" wheels so I wouldn't think the speedo would be off.
There are so many distractions in our MINIs, radar detectors can certainly help remind you to watch out, they won't keep you from getting a speeding ticket if you ignore the warnings. =)

My daily commute is around LAX, the cops love to watch Imperial, Westchester and Pershing. It's always best to watch your speed there. But I was on Main St in El Segundo a month or so back, they have a little speed indicator, and I was going speed limit according to my speedo, but the display indicated I was going slower by about 3 mph. I have 16" wheels.

I guess it's a good thing that our MINIs say we are going slower than we really think we are! I'm in that same area every morning since my sons school is across from LAX near Otis and I take Lincoln to the 105 West.

On city street, it is more likely that you will get tagged by a radar or laser, in which case the cop probably hasn't noticed the color of a given car until he goes to pull it over.
On the highways, I think a patrol officer will first notice the speed differential between the speeding car, and the one's who don't speed. The quick lane changes, etc. Like staring at the side of a hill, until the deer moves, THEN he locks on.
If you're driving fast on the highway, with no one else around you, you'll get noticed because you're the only game around!

Drives like a grandma. Yeah. Right.
PS: My grandma had a 1972 Chevelle with a 350. She lived on a street called Pasadena Avenue. Obviously, she was called "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena." (you youngsters, Google the song.)

The right for which apparently costs $237, including traffic school. Honestly not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Seriously, normally I drive maybe 75 in a 65, tops (except on I-5...all bets are off there). I'd been driving like a jackass the whole week, and I totally deserved it.
