Audi Goes After the MINI Cooper

The A1 is Audi's answer to the popular MINI Cooper, but with a more masculine design. The car is powered by a 1.4L TFSI engine that puts out 150 horsepower and is mated to an S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. There is also a 41 horsepower electric motor in the rear of the car that can deliver more power when it is needed through the rear axle. The lithium-ion powered electric motor is also capable of moving the car on its own, up to 100km. The batteries also can be recharged at any electrical outlet.

That is really quite nice looking. Bet the cargo room is a lot less than the MINI, but the dual power concept is pretty neat.
Make it with a bit more stock hp and I'll take it for a test drive. . .
I bet this is another cool car that won't be coming to the US.. . . .

I agree that Audi needs to do something about their hideous front grilles, but I am always happy to see someone working to make a fun smaller vehicle.

That is some ugly sheet metal right there. Sad. From any view that excludes the front of any Audi, they look great. As soon as you get a sneak peek at the nose, it chunk-hurlin time!
There also far too much sheet metal in front of the front tires. The overhang reminds me of some Pontiac. Almost need a 5th wheel on the nose to hold it up lest the weight of it pivot the car on the front wheels raising the rear end off the ground. OY!
If that is the best they can do, Mini ain't got anything to worry about.

They all try to "go after" the mini. But the difference is that Minis are a line cars made by Mini. All of these cars are one car in a line up of the company. They can never mimic the Mini mystique because they dont represent what a Mini means to people
I was a little worried when I first heard about this a few months ago. Worried that it might be something I would want to get out of my MINI for, but now that I see the concept and the direction they want to head.....I'm no longer worried.
There is the BMW 135i though...

A more masculine design??? What the heck is that supposed to mean!! One journalist recently observed that the MINI Cooper was one car that was not designed in anger. Man, he got that right. I am sick of "masculine" or "sporty" being interpreted with stupid flares, gratuitous sweeps, and scowling headlights. The MINI design is clean and classic...automakers better get down to basics and cut all this faux crap.
it IS pretty ugly..both the red one and the blue one pictured. but i do like the little features it has.
it's not worth it when the body is THAT ugly.
nothing can come close to my mini. mmmm

Audi can do way better than that...
