$16,000 repair

My wife's Mini,

Was very, very, skeptical but the Insurance Company would not total. Mini is an 06 with leather and Nav. and auto, so the value was kind of up there.

On top of that the Mini said that she had protected my wife so well that we should give her another life. Anyway, we have now had the car back for about 3 months and 6,000 miles. Paint job was the best I have ever seen. No problems.

WOW! There are some fairly nasty pics/vids in this thread. Not going to mention it to my wife...she would never want to take the MINI out of the garage.

But, "KUDOS" to the MINI and its life saving abilities! It makes me feel very good that my wife is driving around in a car that appears to protect its occupants with such skill.

You'e made your own point - these little bank vaults seem to hold up well...

Driver education: If anyone's interested, PittStopMINI is holding our Winter Driving course at BeaveRun again this year, probably on Feb 17 or so, keep an eye on the webpage www.pittstopmini.org. We get basic driver's ed for winter, and ample time to practice on slick surfaces - with instructors in the car if you want.

Have to also recommend BeaveRun's Total Road Skills course. My wife and daughter took it and I noticed a definite positive difference in the way they both drove afterwards. www.beaverun.com

Why do you tempt me to drive to Pittsburgh?

From Waukesha? It's a great drive! 8 (call it 9) hours total, 540 miles. Make a Motoring adventure out of it... leave early (avoid Chicago traffic!) early lunch in South Bend (or road-lunch it on an I-80 rest stop) and take the afternoon in Auburn, IN checking out the Auburn/Cord/Deusenberg car museums (open 9am - 5pm)! Find a good B&B there, enjoy the evening, and complete the trip (another 4 hours) the next day, maybe stopping at Summit in Akron OH on the way... or leg it here on Friday night, have fun all day Saturday, and do the touring on the way back! ...bring me some cheese!

(I used to have Waukesha in my sales territory years ago... great area! Loved watching the waterski club on the Fox river on Wednesday nights... come to Wisconsin and smell our Dairy Air!)

www.pittstopmini.org , keep your eyes on it...

I'm sure Coop's insurance company found him to be at fault. No matter how silly the person's reason for slamming on his brakes, Coop had a legal duty to allow enough stopping distance to not strike the other vehicle in the rear. I've seen some pretty silly reasons to slam on brakes in my line of work, but the person who strikes them in the rear is always at fault.

I recently worked claim where the other driver stopped on in interstate entrance ramp. You can image the results. Although she wasn't very bright, she was not at fault.

Only one exception to that rule: If the lead car's driver slams on their brakes to intentionally cause the other vehicle to strike them in the rear. And the only way to really prove that is if the lead driver admits to it in a moment of rage and is heard by an independent witness.

I had this happen to me a few years ago. No accident but what a mess.
She would not enter the interstate as there was never enough room with traffic. She eventually started driving down the shoulder.
I waited until she was far enough down the interstate and just had to go for it. I had to buy new underwear after that.

That would stink; I know that when I was involved in a rear-ending (I had a woman hit me) the woman's insurance company said that I was guilty, while my insurance company said she was guilty. The problem here was that there wasn't any police report filed because in md they don't do them for personal property damage. BS if you ask me. I had been in a circle where it gained a lane right near where I needed to turn, somebody turned into the lane I needed to be in to turn, so I had to stop so that I could get over and she wasn't paying attention and rear-ended me. I pulled off on a side road, expecting her to follow, but instead she drove off. I had to go to class, so I stopped by the police station on the way home, and she had reported that I waved her on. Really angered me.

I was just trying to figure out if Coop's insurance company (or the other person's) was attempting the same shenanigans that occurred with mine.

I always had a guilty habit of reading through this thread from time to time and feeling bad for everyone that had damaged vehicles. I also remember thinking that I never wanted to have anything to contribute to this thread other than sympathy...

NOW I have something. One of the first snows in NYC. It stuck at first earlier in the evening and eventually turned to sleet and freezing rain by the time I started heading home from a friends house @ about 3:30am. It was very slippery but I was going slow and maintaining control. I get all the way from the Bronx back to Brooklyn (about 23miles) without a single problem. I'm about to make the last turn of the trip home maybe 200' or less from my garage and an SUV comes skidding through a read light and right into me in the middle of the intersection as I was about to make a left hand turn. That last sentence sounded kind of dramatic because in reality we were both going pretty slow which is part of the reason why the damage is relatively minimal, especially compared to some of the other cars featured in this thread. Anyways... I get out of my car immediatly, probably red in the face kinda like this guy -> . I see the guy in the truck looking out of his window at my car and then... he DRIVES AWAY !! I couldn't get his plate# because it was still snowing and dark so I tried to follow him for about two seconds before I realized that FWD was no match for his 4WD. I proceed to collect the broken pieces of my car and drive the last 200' to my garage...

What a p***k! Whatever happened to people taking responsibility for their actions? Just glad you weren't hurt and that damage wasn't any worse than that.

Merry Christmas...

What a ******. This is a situation where you need one of those trunk monkeys...

Sorry to see about your MINI, he looks a lot like mine. Thankfully, it appears that it can be fixed.

Can I Still Track Where My MINI Went?

How do I follow what happend to my MINI, how do I go about it?
Can I find out where its at?
Auction place said they can't tell me who the bidder was, but that by the bid it will pobably be back on the road.
I want to know where its at.
Is this possible to track it down?

Someone found my total on Craigslist, but it was just a coincidence that they posted it on a forum I frequent. You could try searching the VIN through google or something like that (if it is for sale and posted online you might find it that way) or run a carfax report on it.

A woman just ran into my MINI. I dropped my husband off at the commuter van stop so he could bring it home, and there was a really long line to get out of the parking lot, with a very short light. The woman in front of me got part way into the intersection, but didn't go when the light changed. Then she started to back up--no problem except that I didn't have room to go back myself. When the light changed, she apparently forgot that she was still in reverse, and pow! When she started to pull off it looked like she was going to run, so I followed, big time. Still kept driving. She said she was trying to find a place to park (in a huge gas station, mind you), but I couldn't read the plate. I hollered--and not politely, I might add--and she did park. She said she wasn't running. After I calmed down I told her I'd had half a dozen friends have people drive-offs, and I thought she was going to, as well. (I didn't tell her they were all internet buds!)

At any rate, I THINK it's okay--can't be sure in the dark, so I got the info and told her I'd look at it in daylight.

Stupid.

Goodness, well here's hoping there's not any damage. It's amazing how many times I've seen that same thing happen. Put it in reverse and just completely forget to put it back in drive or 1st gear... Thankfully only one of them resulted in an actual impact.

Oh, there was a definite impact, all right. Not a whiplash kind of thing, of course, but enough that I wasn't about to let her get away. And with all the heavy Christmas traffic tonight, it would have been SO easy.

Try to find out if there were any witnesses. If there is damage to the front end of your car and the rear of hers, she can claim, if she is less than honest, that you ran into her. Without witnesses, she has a good chances of winning.

No witnesses, and it was dark.

I don't think anything was damaged, and nothing was apparent on her car either. I'll just have to way for daylight to see for sure.

Okay, advice needed. I went out to look at it just now, and the license plate and bracket obviously took the brunt of the pressure. It is bowed (curved, not bent), and at one end of the bracket the bumper has a slight crack. It's about 3/4" long, and just within the surface of the bumper.

If I claim for a new bumper that means a possibility of non-matching paint, possible damage when it is removed and replaced, etc. I hate to go through all this if it's not going to get worse.

Has anyone had any experience with a surface crack such as this? Is there any possibility that it would expand lengthwise, widen, etc?
