The Porsche Cayman S is a mighty fine car. You have good taste. Nice to get these differing opinions from someone outside the community.

Thank you. I see you joined NAM six months ago or so. I sold my JCW in September, so its not like I'm outside. I've lived and breathed everything from performance mods to bling. Just waiting now for the turbo convertables to come out. My wife really like the convertables

I understand some of the concerns posted here, but did you even catch the positive comments of the article too?

What gradually won me over is how much fun the Mini is to drive, especially if you go with the Mini Cooper S, which BMW calculates will accelerate from 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds.
The Mini Cooper S is a blast to drive, even with an automatic transmission.
There's no vehicle that quite rivals the Mini, but there are some sporty and practical alternatives that are even cheaper.
As much as I like those cars, though, I prefer the Mini Cooper. It costs more, but it's also more distinctive and has a more solid feel. If you can get your hands on a Mini Cooper S at a reasonable price, it's also a lot more fun to drive.
Seems to me he really liked the car. Some of you guys need to develop thicker skins!

The spinning out comment was certainly laugh-worthy

Yes, I think we can all agree on that.

And haven't we all learned that any mass media MINI review posted here is nothing but a virtual pinata for us to smack around?

Ok, a bit OT, but this got me curious. Here is the quote from page 87 (hehe, someone is a practical joker at Mini. Page 87,..lol,...for covering minimum fuel ratings of 87,..those comical British!) of my Owner's Manual.

"Required Fuel

Super Premium Gasoline/AKA 91
This gasoline is highly recommeneded.

However, you may also use gasoline with less AKI. The minimum AKI rating is 87.

If you use gasoline with this minimum rating, the engine may produce knocking sounds when starting at high outside temperatures. This has no effect on engine life."

The section continues on about using high quality brands of fuel as well.

Ken_Cooper, I suspect you are right as well. The initial potential engine knocking, when using low octane fuel at high ambient temperatures, is probably due to initial settings at engine startup which get set to other values once all the sensors are online.

I thnk he liked the car, but was really trying hard to maintain his machismo. It was like he wrote the article, went back and inserted things to make sure he would not sound like he enjoyed the car too much. There is a disjointed feel to it.

Might have been the editor as well. "WTF IS THIS?!?!? YOU THINK WE ARE SOME KIND OF GAY RAG!!!" I could see that. I get a lot ribbing from guys who measure their manhood by how high their truck sits from the ground.

But he did make some rather blantantly silly/stupid/ignorant comments as well. Not that some of us are not over-reacting a bit. However, I neve over-react.

most articles seem to disappoint me when it comes to the MINI. writers seem to insist on comenting who small the car is when the article is about perfomance. What edge pointed out as a positive in the article is exactly my point. BMW calculates 0-60 times. This means he didn't check for himself. How do I know he actually drove the car even out of the parking lot!

Check out Motor trend June 07. Americas Best handling Spots car. They put the MINI up with everything out there from Honda Civic Si to Porsche 911 GT3. No it didn't win, Obviously the GT3 is going to win this. But the only 4 cylinder Front driver to beat it was the EVO. And they gave that because they said it was idiot proof. OK I can except that fortunately for me I am not an idiot and don't have to worry about such thing.

What I liked best were the comments from the professional driver that did the hot laps. Since it was the MINI he got out of smiling. " This car makes me laugh, it's such a little spots car; a little racing car."

That's why I bought mine nice to know somebody gets it.

Skuzzy, maybe they put a different Manual in the MC, although mine seems to cover both. Anyway, it's clear your says something different than mine.

Exactly how do you think this article is about performance?

The subtext says ...

"With its great gas mileage and BMW-like handling, the Cooper S is the perfect fun-to-drive car for a fuel-conscious age"

How is that about performance any more that good mpg and just fun to drive? I think maybe you might "want" it to be about performance? Real people with real needs buy these cars and comments like "Tight rear seats, small luggage space, overly quirky interior" are true. When you read the MT article, that was about performance. Different article for different audiences.

My manula seems to cover both as well. Seems there are different manual revisions then.

Just curious, what is on your page 87 of the Owner's Manual?
