2007 NAM F1 Challenge

Greetings fellow F1 fans! With interest picking up in the new 2007 F1 thread, it seems like a good time to start growing a 2007 NAM PickSix team. We've participated for two years so far, but if you've never done the PickSix thing you're not far behind because it has to be the simplest "fantasy league" ever.

Check it out here and post in this thread if you want to play along, then all you have to do is email the Little Commish (commish@picksix.com) to sign up (and tell him you want to be added to the NAM F1 Challenge list).

Once you're on the list, the process is very simple. Go to the PickSix site, navigate to your quick picks page for the upcoming race, pick the drivers you think will finish in the top six positions for that race, and submit your picks. It's that easy! You can check out the scoring rules at PickSix - there are points for more than just matching the drivers' finishing positions so the event scores are often surprising!

I expect an interesting season and can't wait for it to start!

If you're in on the challenge, let me know (post here), and I'll add you to the list.

I've played a different Pick Six for years now. It's at http://motorsport.com/compete/p6/index.asp?S=F1 . It has players from all over the world about 2500 to 3000 of them. I didn't realize that they have group play also and it's free just like the other. I like the fact that it's part of a motorsports website so there's plenty of other data.

I'll register at both if that's where we'll play it.

Thanks, I didn't know about that one.

I checked out their rules and I like a couple of the features, like the Nations Cup and Popularity Poll, but the pick deadline rule turns me off. Here are some details from the site:

"The Nations' Cup

In addition to the individual Pick6 Champion, there will be a "Nations' Cup" awarded. For each race, each country's score towards the Nations' Cup will be calculated from the scores of players from that country, based on how many players there are from that country''."

"The driver Popularity Poll.
You'll notice one "player" in the standings summary called Popularity Poll. The Popularity Poll's pick for each race is determined by treating each player's pick for the race as though it were the real race results, assigning points to the drivers accordingly, (using the same scoring values as we use in the Pick 6 competitions) and then taking the top 6 drivers as the pick. The Popularity Poll thus indicates the collective wisdom of all the players. For the last several years, it has performed well above average."

"Deadlines for picks

Picks are due by 6:00am, local time, on the day of first untimed practice for the race. Usually this is 6:00 AM Friday morning, local time of the race site, but some races (e.g., Monaco) hold first practice on Thursday. We choose this time so that those who have access to early practice and qualifying information won't have an unfair advantage over those who don't.
Your pick is validated and registered immediately. You can confirm this by going to the Pick Query page
Late picks will not be accepted. Picks registered very soon after the deadline will be flagged as late in the standings reports and are subject to review and probable rejection later in the season. You may send in picks as far in advance of a race as you wish, and you may change your pick as many times as you wish, up to the deadline. The last pick received and allowed will be the one that is used."

The PickSix rules allow you to pick (or modify your picks) right up until the start of the race.....or maybe it's the warm-up lap.....whatever, until virtually the last minute.

There are some other differences as well, including PickSix's bonus points:
"There are 4 bonus categories, worth additional points.
  • First Time Winner (5 points) - Driver wins the race and has not yet won in the current season.
  • Darkhorse (5 points) - Driver finishes in the top six for the first time within the current season.
  • Flush (10 points) - All six of your drivers finished somewhere in the top six.
  • Royal Flush (25 points) - All six drivers finished in the top six, in the exact order picked."
...Motorsport Pick6's one-race picks carry over:
"Picks may be carried over for one race
If you fail to send in a pick for a race, or if your pick arrives too late to be counted, your pick for the last race will be used again, but it will only be carried over once (so if you fail to enter a pick for race #3, race #2's pick will be used, but if you fail to enter again, race #2's pick will not be used for race #4)."

...etc, but the basic premise is the same.

I'm personally inclined to stick with the site we've been using. Any opinions/preferences?

The time-limit is pretty strict. It does stop the chance of looking at the first days times and getting a better pick than just raw. It does have the roll-over so that if you forget about a race date coming up it'll keep you last picks as your current ones. You'd have to miss two races before you get a zero for not submitting your picks. The nations cup has been an eye-opener. The US hasn't exactly done well. But this past year I was pleased with myself because I made the top 500 and the top 250 once each. It's really tough to make it up there. Or at least it's been tough for me to make it.

Very cool! I am EXTREMELY interested in Kimi as both an Iceman fan an a die hard tifosi...

What do you think of Alonso in the McLaren...

Randy

PS - I know it is a bit off topic and there is already a thread, but I was honestly just too lazy to go over there. My apologies up front .

I think he'll be hanging his head just like Kimi was last year. It wasn't a function of his driving but of the strength of his car or lack there of.

I expect him to end up with a better record than Kimi last year.....and since I'm basically a cynic I expect folks to say things like "it's not the car, Alonso is just that much better!"

We'll see! I think Kimi is going to stomp him though. The car was definitely what has been holding Kimi back. The only issue I se as a possible problem is Kimi's sorting ability. If the car is good to start, it will be a good season for him.

If Alonso does well, it will be because of his incredible luck as a racer (a very important ingredient!).

Nothing against Kimi (he's one hell of a racer, partyer and as Martin Brundle will attest, he can leave a mean sh*t on international tv) but Filipe Massa has just got to be the tifosi's choice for '07. He is Schumi's successor for all the right reasons, methinks that Kimi is at Ferrari more because of Renault's effup with Alonso which caused him to jump ship to McLaren back in '05 (he had a remaining year on his contract through '06). As no one knew what Schumacher was going to do (should I stay or should I go?) Kimi did the proper thing and got a great deal with Ferrari.

Welcome!

You're on the list above but you still have to register at PickSix (use your screen name) and email the commish to tell him to put you (give him both your name and screen name to be sure he gets it right) on the NAM F1 Challenge list. That way, your pick scores will show up on the NAM list and you can track your progress there as well as in the overall standings.

By the way, I'm confused. You've been a member here since '03 but you have an '06 MINI on order.....what am I missing? Been participating here until you could get your first MINI or is the '06 maybe MINI #2?

The '06 is MINI #2. MINI #1 was an '03 BRG/W S. My job situation dictated selling the '03, and I've missed it ever since. Just now got back to the point of being able to get another.

Just emailed the pick-six commish.

That's the plan. I'm also going to try to attend both the USGP at Indy on June 17th and maybe the Grosser Pries von Deutschland in July. I can't wait for the post-Schumi era to begin. After 15 years as Schumi's No.1 fan I gotta get me a new piloto. Hmm, Massa, Alonso and Kubica are on my short list.

That's geat - hope you do at least as well as last year. Let's see, the only way you can finish better than last year means 1st place, right?

My favorite driver at the moment has to be Kubica. Of course I won't be cheering for him to actually win.....Kimi and Massa are on that list, and not because they'll drive the red cars; the drivers I like just happen to be on the same team.

Anybody else in? C'mon, don't tell me Schumi's retirement sucked all the interest out of F1.....

Despite your proven prowess at prognostication . . . I can't agree with you here.

I'd like to clarify a point, Massa was not the chosen replacement for Schumacher. I think there's been a great deal of misunderstanding in regards to Schumacher's post race comment. He was referring to Raikkonen.

Anyway, I like Felipe, but in my mind he made a number of mistakes last year and did not display the sort of consistency I'm certain Kimi will deliver.

I guess we shall see.
