We had 9 MINI Cooper S and 2 MINI Coopers in yesterday's BMWCCA autocross. As the results show below, the MINIs did darn well.

Randy put up the fastest time in our class and also had the PAX time of the day. Congrats.

The MINIs also swept the first seven of 16 spots.

It's $40 per race for BMWCCA members $45 for non members. The entry fee includes lunch. It really makes sense to join BMWCCA since they have a supurb national mag (the Roundel) and the local chapter publishes it's newsletter as well. Plus membership entitles you to a $5 discount on event registration for autocross (the BMWCCA plug is now over).

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of BMWCCA has a six event autocross series starting in June. Before that, there is an autocross school at Coors Field (the parking lot north of Coors field). Registration opens in early May for the autocross school.

May 31 Coors Field - autocross school for novices
June 1 Coors Field - points series
June 28 Coors Field - points series
July 20 Coors Field - points series
August 24 World Arena - points series (Colorado Springs)
September 27 Coors Field - points series
October 19 Bandimere - points series
November 15 Fall Dinner/Elections/Autocross Awards

What a great time!!!

You should have seen all of the MINIs out there amongst the Bimmers. What a beautiful sight.

As a piggy back to this, I also ran the SCCA autocross today. I was in a class with 20 other cars, and because of the pulley, was forced into SM - a class that requires R compound tires (race tires) to be competitive. Even with my street tires though, I was able to close to within less than 1 second of the win, and finished second. That taught me a valuable lesson - race tires are a must for SCCA (another investment I guess). I have been told they are worth around 2 seconds, and I will be going down to 15 inch wheels to get the biggest advantage possible (and the Hoosiers shed another 10 lbs per corner from the Falkens!!). I want to win, and go to nationals - Topeka here the MINIs come!

The next event is May 10th for SCCA, so I have a little time to make some improvements too. The LEDAs weren't on the car this weekend due to some revalving going on, and the H-Sport springs are constantly selling out, so I had to go with the old H&Rs. The next event I should have all the goodies (I had to take the throttle body and LS header off for development as well, so those will help too).

To anyone who hasn't tried this sport - it is fun, cheap, safe, and really friendly to new folks. It only requires a helmet, and you can even borrow one of those from the club to see if you want to make the commitment,

It's also worth saying that our own S-fiveten won the STX class, another class with 20+ cars I believe!

The MINIs Rock!!

Feel free to contact me to get started in autocrossing. I am relatively new to it, and have really found it easy to adapt to compared to road racing.

Looks like a great time! Randy, congrats on the win!

What's the green flag for? I have only seen red flags at the local events here. ?!?

If you're talking about Mason, his screenname is shockmonkey. As I recall Stuart (Sfiveten) lives in Alabama.

Lots of fun this weekend. Although there has been some more mention or reclassing the MINIs on the RMC BMWCCA yahoo group.

In total agreement there. This was my first autocross and I had a GREAT
time! My thanks to everybody who helped make it such a great event!

Matt

Is there any thought of adding another class for the Mini's? No offense, but
god they are good...and I am not....so we need to even the class.

I'd suggest riding in those Mini's.

We have a number of excellent drivers who have chosen to drive Mini's
in our region. Ride with them in the morning and find out what they
are doing!

Any Mini Drivers that have SCCA Solo II National trophies, you guys
are in X-class!! There are some other ways to qualify, we need to
get those rules posted...

Mason Thomas (shockmonkey) won STX in our first SCCA outing in our MCO project car here in the Colorado region. More information will be coming soon on the project!

Indeed, the Denver BMWCCA autocross was a great event! Thanks to Dave and Randy for the MINI5280.org hospitality. Tent for shade, organized paddock and cookies for energy. A great time was had by all!

Sorry about that shockmonkey! He is the man.

So you beat them up a couple of times, and they want us in a new class . About the national title comment, I wonder if they know none of us (except Mason and Mark) have done an entire season of autocrossing yet???

Andy,

The green flag was the starter. He waves it to let you know you can go - the course is hot.

Here is a copy of my e-mail to the BMWCCA yahoo group.

I'd like to thank everyone on the Autocross Committee and at the Rocky
Mountain Chapter for supporting and organizing such a well run and fun
event. Additionally, I'd like to thank Bob Sutterfield for extending an
early welcome on the part of the Board to MINI owners.

My introduction to autocross was this past October at the Bandimere event.
I placed 10th in a field of 13 with my MINI Cooper S. A friend co-drove
my car. He was 3 seconds faster and placed 2nd. It was an eye opening
experience for a neophyte. It was also a ton of fun. I was hooked.

This past Saturday, I came out for the winter warm-up autocross at Coors
Field. It was apparent by the number of MINI owners that either
participated or watched, that I wasn't the only one who had been looking
forward to the event.

I was happy with the way my day progressed. In the morning practice, I
overshot the braking point at the turn around. The next time out, I
compensated a little bit too much and entered slow. As I learned the
course better, I slowly started pulling back time. The 4th set of runs in
the afternoon was an added bonus.

At the end of the day, I was pleased with my own progress, and my
mid-class finish. At the same time, the placing of some of the other
drivers in my class made clear there was still room for improvement.
Again, I drove away knowing I was hooked.

I'm looking forward to my first autocross season, and excited about the
prospects of improving my own abilities alongside the other drivers in CS
class during the points series.

Thanks again to RMC BMWCCA for hosting an excellent event!

Awesome job guys, you make the MINI community very proud and envious to be able to participate and compete so well. Good luck for the rest of the season, and keep the results and pics coming!
