Additional gauges for JCW

This was at the bottom of the Mini JCW Cabrio Press Release

New on the MINI and MINI Clubman: additional John Cooper Works instruments. The John Cooper Works performance components give even greater emphasis to the sporting character of every MINI highlighted also through the car’s looks. The new, additional John Cooper Works instruments, now available on both the MINI and MINI Clubman are a particularly attractive addition to the range.
This option allows full integration of up to two circular instruments in the immediate vicinity of the rev counter, with the additional instruments finished in the style of a sports car cockpit coming in special MINI design and blending perfectly with the interior of the car. With their anthracite-colored faces, they add further appeal to the sporting character of the cockpit.
Here the discerning customer has the choice of three different analogue instruments, up to two of which may be integrated to the right and left of the rev counter, directly in the driver’s field of vision. The coolant temperature gauge, for example, gives the driver clear information on the engine’s current running conditions, enabling him to monitor the process of warming up the engine and gauge his style of motoring precisely to current conditions.
The relative torque indicator permanently informs the driver on the engine’s load condition, showing current torque on the crankshaft relative to the maximum torque available. Proceeding from this information, the driver will find it much easier to choose the ideal gear for dynamic acceleration at all times.
On the MINI Cooper S, the MINI John Cooper Works, the MINI Cooper S Clubman and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman the driver is additionally informed on the current operation of the Overboost function.

All MINIs may also be fitted with a lateral acceleration indicator providing information on centrifugal forces in a bend and on winding roads.
The additional John Cooper Works instruments are an ideal opportunity to further highlight the sporting character of the MINI and the MINI Clubman, raising driving pleasure to an even higher level. In their design and quality, the additional instruments meet all the high standards of the BMW Group. They are sold and fitted by MINI dealers within the MINI network worldwide.

Memory?

I'm hoping the lateral acceleration gauge will have a peak memory option. I know I wont be looking at the gauge while trying to peg the needle for it. Wish I had the option for a factory boost gauge!

I am so happy I am getting a JCW in a few months, this is definitely on the option list.

Mini finally listened to their customers who wanted more info from their car.

and just to clarify, the 3 gauge options are

Temp Gauge
Relative Torque Gauge
Lateral G guage

And the over boost gauge will be separate from those 3?

I hope if I don't get the temp gauge I can still check it on the computer

The press release makes it sound like these gauges are available for all Minis including the base model Cooper. I wonder if they are compatible with say a 2007 MC R56? I don't see why not, my guess is they just tie into the computer with a gauge that reads out in analog fashion. I was going to go the scan gauge II route for a coolant temperature, but would rather do one of these if dealer installed.

I'll add. I'm hoping the 'pods' to be modular enough so that after market makers can create gauges to fit into that housing to meter things that may interest us other than what Mini has chosen to offer. If it is modular enough I expect it to happen.

When are these options available? I have a JCW Clubman on its way to me shortly and was wondering if I could call my dealer and add these? Or are they not released yet? Does anyone know?

Other then the coolant gauge these seem more like "gee-whiz" gauges. How about something useful like oil pressure/oil temp. I'd like to get my car on the track this Spring, but cannot even fathom going out there without something telling me what the "engine" is doing, I'd like to know what Oil pressure, coolant temp, etc is doing before the motor goes "boom".

Scan Gauge II can on some vehicles read oil temp, transmission temp, etc. Go to their page and read about the new x-gauge feature. They don't have anything on the mini listed, but I'm hoping that they do add additional measurements for the mini than the standard 12 they have for all vehicles. They claim they are adding more all the time so I'd check back. I don't think its a big deal for scan gauge to add more mini measurements, I think they have a bunch in the OBC, its just a matter of SW to get scan gauge to pull them out. Scan gauge also claims if you have an older scan gauge II you can send it in for a sw update to get x gauge working. I'd prefer the mini gauge for engine temp if it is retrofitable on a R56 MC, but I'll get a scan gauge if I have to.

I'm using a Scangauge II mainly for water temp right now.

I would love to have a factory gauge for this!

Hope it fits all R56s!

Yea, I looked at scanguage, it would be OK for the track, but not very attractive, for everyday use, I was looking for something that looked a little more integrated. These aren't to bad if I used an aftermarket pod adapter, but $1K for gauges (including installation) is a little steep.

Although I don't have a JCW, I recently had a water temp gauge and boost gauge installed in my '07 Cooper S (R56). The gauges together came to just under $200, the pods were $150 (how Alta can get that amount for such a simple item is beyond me) and install was about $350. The gauges I have are Prosport but I didn't get them from Alta. They work fine and I am pleased to finally have a water temp gauge. Email me if you want details on the gauges.

If you look at the picture in the release, the gauge on the left appears to be Mini's relative torque gauge, overboost would be indicated by the blue section representing 100-110% torque :P

that's just a stupid gauge, Mini obviously doesn't want anyone being able to see how much boost their car's making and thus being unable to compare between 2 different Mini's or customers being able to gauge a drop or lack of performance, etc

I want a coolant temp gauge, that alone is worth it. I would also like an oil temp gauge, but I bet you it would be a dummy gauge based off of load, coolant temp and revs... so probably not to accurate. I think the temp and load gauge would be ok.

That lateral G gauge isn't really worth it.

I'm with you. Gauges are for people that "care" about what their engine is doing, mostly performance minded people. SO WHY NOT give them the information they need. Temp/Boost/Oil Pressure! Everything else is just marketing.

motoringfile.com says that they are officially being released as a retrofit kit available this spring.

I asked my dealer yesterday and he had no idea what they were yet. Haha, he heard about them from me.

I would go with the coolant gauge and maybe relative torque just to balance out the dash. There is a .pdf file for the install on that site, looks like a nice clean plug-and-play device, which is why I personally would go with these over something aftermarket. It's ridiculous that they won't just make boost and oil gauges; if you look at the controller settings in the instruction manual, it looks like these are the only 3 they plan on releasing.

See here:

I went by my dealer this morning and they quoted $305 for the single gauge and $315 for the double... Not sure about labor yet....
