Do you need to take the car back to the dealer to have it programmed once you install them?

I went to the convertible event this weekend because I happened to be nearby and when I was asking about the gauge(they have a lateral G installed on all the launch R57s) and I saw the price. It was $300 for the single gauge kit and right around $89.50 for the gauge itself. I was inquiring into if the convertible was able to support the 2 gauge kit but nobody there could tell me.

No. It is a simple add, no reprogramming needed.

I think i read in the install guide that convertibles or cars with the add on MINI nav can only have the 1 gauge.

And I think I like the UK prices better.

If you go to www.prosportgauges.com you'll see the gauges and the connector. They don't call it a connector but I can't recall the nomenclature at the moment. Give it a try.
I had my water temp gauge and boost gauge installed by the shop that does my maintenance and I think I paid about $350 for the job. The only complaint I have about the gauges is the one that you choose to install to the left of the tach picks up heavy glare from the driver's door window.
Investigator : what model of gauges did you install from prosport? Do you have pictures?

I ordered two of the new JCW gauges; Water Temp and Lateral G. There were two problems when they arrived. First, they had different color faces. Lateral G face was black and Water Temp face was grey-ish looking. They didn't look like a pair. Secondly, Water Temp was only available in Celsius. The parts guy investigated and was told it was not, and will not be, available in Fahrenheit. Anyone else had this experience or have related intelligence?

so, do you get to choose the colour of the faces, or it was "just" a mistake?

I far as I know, there was no choice among the gauge face colors. Then again, all the order forms were all in German!

I had the torque and water temp gauges put in two days ago. The water temp gauge face is lighter then the torque gauge. Could possibly be from two different vendors.

With this Mini, I have 3 german cars. All use celsius for temp. I just live w/it; you get used to it after a short time. The car should be around/above 80C for proper operational temp for any WOT/high RPM usage. 100C is boiling point at 1 atmosphere, usually 120C under pressure I think. What temp does the mini gage show as "red zone"?

The temperature gauge in the new JCW accessory package reads a max of 120 degrees Celsius with a redline starting at 115 degrees. The problem, however, is more with the fact that the gauge face is grey and does seem to closely match the black face of either the lateral 'g' or relative torque gauges. For the price, the faces should match. I don't think that's asking too much.

the more I read about this, the less I think this a sound plan concieved and implemented by MINI. After all, no boost gauge? Different color faces? Temp gauge in celsius??

the most useful bit of tech I'd like to get my hands on is the temp gauge install guide. Where & how does the factory gauge get its signal from ? I'm tempted to buy one just so I can reverse engineer it.

That seems about right. That's 239 F. A scangauge II reports my car runs around 220 F normally.

Anyone have a clue as to what a pair of these would cost yet?

Sorry...I missed the threads that had the pricing.

The cost for two JCW gauges, the brackets and the accompanying control ran about $525. For that price I expect a top notch product and not something that looks slapped together.

Look on Motoringfile. The installation instructions were posted there as a pdf file. It looked pretty simple, just tie into existing wiring, no sensors, so they are pulling out data that is already in the OBC and converting it to analog.

Pics someone?? I'd really like to see temp and relative torque to see how color mismatched they are. That seems mindboggling...., particularly for 525 bucks installed. I had planned to spring for these, but it may be scan gauge II.

Sucks, you're right, it looks like pulling data from the OBD/CAN-BUS and using a control module to convert it to the various analog signals
I was really hoping they were simply tapping into the analog engine sensors and using a calibrated gauge, nothing so simple.

btw, anyone else interested, the pdf can be found here http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/03/...retro-fit-kit/

Those new gauges really do look like crap, why Mini couldn't even match the faces with the rest of the instruments is beyond me

A heads up for anyone looking for real oem (looking) gauges, check this thread in the gen 1 section.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ry-gauges.html
They come w/ silver rings to match the standard interior and optional piano black or chrome rings available, availablilty is mid to late June.
