Arrow COMPLETE -- retrofitting OEM mini UJ Tail light into 2019 F60

edit per May 7th 2021
IN PROGRESS

status now is completed.
please see below on tackling the problem of both brake and turn signals are applied.

1st of all, Thank you to

- ECS Tuning for processing my tail light order.
- my friends who I cant submit their name in giving me these wiring diagrams.

- please note that, this is still a work in progress. I have not put the lights to my mini F60 just yet.
- my first step was determining the wiring order, especially finding the minus / common ground for these new UJ lights.

- links on buying the OEM mini UJ tail lights can be found by clicking (HERE)

let's start with the boxes. and my son thought is his box of toys

inside were 2 boxes.

open it. there you go...

next post will be for wiring diagrams and light tests.

to be continued....

2nd post.

other information found in the product..

material information.

voltage and current information

if you look closely, inside the connectors, they numbered the pins. this information is important for the next steps.
Arrow means the light is upward position.

one thing to note is, this looks like the lights that I purchased is for US Market, since there are SAE stamps in the lens and back cover. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

wiring diagram

here is the original wiring diagram for my 2019 F60 Taillight.
note the description.

so pin 3 & 5 are common ground
NOTE THE RED DOTS referencing to the pins in the connectors.

and here's the 2021

so routing looks like this.

next posts will be about installation.
will update it as soon as I have pics. Waiting for Philly weather to clear up. forecast says this coming weeks will be rain-free...

I like the picture of the ECS Box being used by your son as a racetrack.

Lights are installed. Found an issue relating to the UJ lights. Note the wiring diagram above that makes the Brake light and Turn Light into 1 circuit.

Will update as Im trying to find a solution.

Results:

You may need coding to make the brake light flash like a turn light, USA style, on SW/GE.

yup. I read this thread (LINK) and posted there but the code lines are different/not existant. Not sure who I can reach out to, but I contacted bimmercode support and see if they will help.

An alternative would be some diodes so that either GR/GE or SW/GE can light the pin 6, without back-powering the circuit.

Yes. diode will prevent any mishaps.

In the meantime, I am finding solution to this small problem. It will require some relays, diodes and some basic electronics in order to cut out power from the brake switch to the lights.
Stephan from Bimmercode already replied my email and said they dont have any information on coding for these mini F60 series as yet.

it will be a fun project! Stay tuned.

Oh right, you need to cut power during braking too. Surprised a gen 1 F60 hasn't been decoded yet. Maybe try a part-number cross reference to determine if F56 or BMW 2 series uses the same module, and the coding has been figured out for them. Or if the newer module (with newer firmware) can be used on an older car. It may (or may not) need VIN coding which could be a bigger can of worms.

I might find a solution...

the problem is when both brakes and blinkers are applied, both will turn on the same led light.

now putting a 5 pin relay might solve it.

- 85 & 86 will be connected to the blinker.
- 30 & 87a is closed. this will connected to the brake light.
- 87 will be not connected.

- so when blinker is on, 85&86 will engage the relay and 30 & 87 will be open, then it will cut power to brake light.

problem is,

when blinker is off, 85&86 will disengage and brake lights will be back on... same thing,

Maybe a delay timer relay will solve this problem between 85 & 86.

**brainstorming session begins**

Buy the Euro lights instead that still use the middle bar as the turn signal and the brake lights are the two diagonal bars.

yes. Note this is for future UJ F60 tail light buyers. will make the process much smoother.

I already bought US Spec one so its too late for me.

Update. This device wont work for this retrofit. problem is because it uses a self function timer, everytime i apply the brake, the brake light wont instantly turn on. This is a safety hazard.

Found something like this in the internet... ordered the part. It looks like it will be the perfect solution for this!

the website says :
Running light cancellation module can be added to any motorcycle or vehicle to add running light cancellation function. Running light cancellation temporary turns off running light on the corresponded side of the vehicle when turn signal is activated. Running light cancellation module is a multi-function timer configured in a specific way to achieve desired functionality.
I'll be just adding a diode between turn light and relay so there's no feedback.

link is here.

Results:

problem solved. not by additional coding.

I just bought this little gadget from customled.com

BLINKER GENIE 2 - FOR AUTOMOBILES

will post a video of the result as time allows.
installation of the blinker genie is very, very simple. kudos to them.

ADMINS, would you change the topic from "in progress" to "complete". thank you.

sure... here you go folks.
you all need to open and take it out from the factory socket pins number :
2, reverse
4, turn/blinker.
5. ground.
6. brake lights

to take out the pins from the socket, follow this procedure, its simple, but please be careful.

1. lift the purple slider upwards until it stop at the first tooth. pictured below

2. then carefully press the "lock" with the screwdriver and pull the wire carefully. CAUTION : DO NOT PUSH THE WIRE OUT WITH THE SCREWDRIVER, YOU WILL BEND THE PIN. If you do it right, the cable will slide out easy. picture below

PLEASE NOTE THE PINS NUMBER!!

as for the pin layout : info below.
pin 1 from the car goes straight to the UJ light as it's the night light.
pin 3 also goes straight to the UJ.
pin 4 will got to the white wire of the blinker genie.(turn signal)
pin 5 will now be used as a ground for the blinker genie.
pin 6 will go to the RED wire of the blinker genie (running light/brake light).

THE DIAGRAM

THE BLINKER GENIE WIRING DIAGRAM FROM ITS WEBSITE :

they came with resistors. But I dont use them as it wont hyperflash/ error codes.

updated 05/08/2021.

NOW. 2ND ISSUE THAT I FORGOT TO ADD.

The original raincover wont fit with UJ taillight.
explanation is below.

1st, lets take a look the stock tail light, with its rain cover attached. The oval slots line up with the rubber grommet in the body of the car,

here is the picture of rubber grommet attached to the body for better explanation.

the UJ tail light with the original rain cover picture. the slot and rubber grommet wont line up.

Will this cause issue when it rains or washing the car?
I dont think so, as the lights has some foam seal around it and that foam attaches to the body of the car.

hope this helps everyone.!!

Great write up! Thanks a lot. So the turn signal will be the diagonal light bars and brake light will be the inner light bar as shown in the uploaded pictures? How about the night light?

No. Pin 6 acts as the whole light. Both diagonal and horizontal. Its a thing for the F60 UJ tail light

The night light is the "inner" space of the light.

Hi,
we picked up a 2017 F60 and looking to retrofit the taillights how did you get it to hold if the bolts didn't align?

Hey BobbyThe taillights will stay in place. It has 2 holes that will fit perfectly with the body.
seee pic attached below with the blue marks.

You probably meant the one that won't attach properly is the rain cover. The raincover is the plastic trim that cover the gap between the trunk and the tail light.
The raincover will stay in place. As it wont go anywhere.
Car washes done.. it stays.
