Is stock intake duct a restriction?

I noticed that the two inlets from the grille side are much smaller combined than the outlet to the air box. It makes me think that this intake duct is causing a bottleneck in intake volume.

Im going to remove it tonight and test. It essentially becomes an aftermarket intake if you remove it and have a performance drop in filter.

Thoughts?

The inlets behind the grille sit in a high pressure area. Also, they pull in cold air from outside the engine bay. You remove them and you’re losing the benefits of both.

I was thinking of grinding out the inlet honeycomb to get a little more volume.

Then you’d need to connect the hood scoop to the intake tract. Eventuri did this very successfully with their aftermarket intakes.

That’s not that easy because the scoop has to seal to the duct. I don’t understand why someone hasn’t 3D printed a modified top half of the stock intake duct for this purpose and made it like $100. Would make Eventuri intake pointless.

I don't think that would work very well unless you also changed to hood scoop. If you look at the under side of the hood you can see that the hex grill is back passed the holes in the under side of the hood. Removing the hex grill from the scoop would funnel air back into the hood not down into the intake. Sure some of the air would move back forward and into the intake, but I don't think the small improvement would be worth blowing rain into your hood to mix with the Cosmoline rust protectant and drip it all over your engine bay...but that is just my initial thoughts on the matter, and I very well may be wrong. If someone can make it work I'll be the first to buy one.

having an open scoop is implied. Carbon open scoops are like $110 on eBay. I’m not talking about the hex grille on the scoop. I’m talking about the intake duct inlets.

I found it. It's not quite $100 but it's not $1000 like the Eventuri either.

sigh ...

Pretty much any forced-path intake - whether using the hood scoop or not - has to be sealed and shaped to an extent or it will create drag, turbulence, and inefficient engine breathing, not to mention allowing the detrimental effects of heat soak, etc. to become factors. This is particularly important in forced-induction engines (turbos, superchargers, etc.).

Eventuri's name is a play on 'Venturi', as in the effect. Look it up. Carbuetors utilized it for decades. That's part of the reason Eventuri's intake works, and part of the reason why it's pricey beyond the CF scoop.

A narrowing of flow path isn't always a point of restriction. Another thing to look up that demonstrates this: NACA ducts. Aero/fluid dynamics are complicated. Ebay junk parts probably weren't designed by someone who knows about them well.

I agree with all of this. I just did a test for science by removing the stock intake duct that goes from the airbox to the front grille and car ran like ****.
