Dinan Sport Bluetooth Connection Problems

Wondering if anyone experienced problems with their Dinan Sport module not connecting via Bluetooth? I've downloaded the app a number of times thinking that might be it but it cannot find the Dinan module.

I'm afraid that this indicates the unit is fried...any thoughts?

The BT is definitely the weakest part of the Dinan Sport. Many of us have been challenged to get it to function properly.

Even when you get it working, it is often spotty at best.

Make sure you've followed all the instructions to get the link to your phone.

If, after everything is done right to establish the link and it's still not happening, call Dinan and don't get off the line until you get the tech support you need.

Dinan is currently undergoing a transition and customer service problems have been reported.

You'll know if the unit is working -- your butt dyno will tell you for sure.

Good luck and do keep us posted.

Have you tried a different device to see if it connects. Iphone/Android. Sometimes I'll have issues with BT on one device and it will work perfect with another. Just happened with an OBDII reader that wouldn't work with my phone, but connected perfectly with another phone.

Are you using an android phone on 8.0 Oreo? Dinan has not updated the app to work with Oreo even though its been out nearly a year now.

To be fair, Bluetooth is radio and the module has to communicate with the phone across an huge chunk of metal (the engine), metal hood and firewall. When I had this, I positioned the module as high as it would reach in the engine bay, and my phone was mounted by the tach. If you secure it down near the sensor or have your phone in a cup holder or lap, the engine is going to interfere big time. The only hope for communication is packets bouncing off the hood back into the car, and that hood has enough going on that multipath interference is a thing.

This worked well for me:

I put mine on the metal next to the battery. Proximity helps for sure. But, at best, it's funky with my iPhone.

I wrote this in the JCW Power Up thread back in 2016:

The new iPhone app is an improvement, once you get it working. Dan at Dinan walked me through the steps. After I deleted the old app and downloaded the new version 1.1 into my phone, Dan had me shut down my phone, reboot my phone, then, making sure my MINI was fully asleep and the red light on the Dinan box under the hood was not lit, I turned on the ignition (but did not start the car) and, upon opening the DinanS app, my phone found the Sport Tuner within seconds and I think the calibration was successful.
