F55 MCS without DDC?

Placed an order for a 2019 F55 MCS without DDC and 17" run flats. Now I'm going through the seemingly typical second guessing process. Wondering if the normal standard suspension would be too stiff? I'm in the my mid 40's and have had back issues in the past. I will basically be using it as a daily driver in So Cal/LA area. I guess I was just counting on MINI's standard suspension to be comfortable enough for the general public...

For anyone with the same setup, I would really appreciate any input on your ride and comfort level. Thank you!

ddc allows you to stiffen the suspension when moving to sport mode. stock without ddc should be softer.

If you want better comfort, drop down to 16" rims. Our F55 with 16's is much softer ride than my F56 with 17's. Both have DDC & Run Flats. You could also ditch the RF's as well.

I order the DDC on my F56 because of back issues and the rather stiff ride I noticed test driving an "S" w/o it. DDC allows me to soften the ride by 10% across the modes. So Sport Mode can be 10% softer than a standard "S" in Mid mode.

IMO worth the $500 up-charge.

Naturally much depends on the extent of your back issue and what one's perception of "too stiff" is.

When my back is flared up, hitting bumps w/ the 10% softer is bearable. W/O, it is jarring and painfully noticeable.

I get it that guys w/o issues dismiss suspension stiffness as bearable or acceptable, however, those of us that have to live on the edge of pain and no pain, the ability to soften a ride is heaven sent.

I don't see how you soften the ride 10% across the modes? Please tell me how? Is it possible that it was a software update along the way that I never got in my 2014?

It's configurable through the Infotainment center.

I forget which of the selections presented when that screen come up needed to be changed to set the 10% softer selection. It was confusing at first as the one I thought would soften the ride 10% in all modes wasn't the correct choice. I figured it out 3 years ago and have not looked at it since.

Yes, I'm aware that a smaller rim/tire size or non-RF tires will both result in a softer ride, but as I've already placed my order and the car is about to start production, I'm doubtful that I can still change to 16" wheels. And I don't think the 2019 LCI even allows factory non-RF tires on the MCS.

I've read countless posts here and on other sites, but most people are either comparing DDC to Sports Suspension, or find that being able to switch from -10 to +10% is great. But no one actually addresses how the normal suspension without DDC drives,,,

My question is therefore for people that actually drive a F55S with 17" RFs... how comfortable or not is the ride?

Thanks for any help!

I have an F56 JCW with DDC and am very pleased with it. I have 17" tires and have no issues with it. It is a BMW system that has been in use for years and I do not think it impacts handling at all. The ride is a bit better than the standard suspension, but you do not give up much in regard to handling.

I dumped the RFs almost immediately, but the tires (Continental Extreme Contact Sport) I chose had a much higher load rating so ride improvement was minimal. Handling and responsiveness was significantly improved. The tires you pick will determine how much of an improvement you feel.

I think it’s a worthy upgrade. Had my 2019 F55S for about 3 weeks now and really enjoy the ride compared to my 2009 R56S. I have 18” wheels vs 17” previously, and even with the stock runflats the ride is light years better than my R56S. However my co-worker also got a 2019 F55S but with no DDC and 17” wheels with the stock runflats. He was switching from an R52 and also believes the ride is light years better, even without the DDC. I haven’t ridden in his car yet so I can’t compare, so your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the responses!

I was specifically asking about the ride for a 2019 F55S with 17” RF and no DDC because that was the build I ordered (Production should be done in the next few days!). I was having second thoughts about not ordering the DCC. But I went back to the dealer to test drive both DDC and non-DDC. I was very satisfied with the ride quality for the non-DCC.

Now just comes the long wait for the car to arrive to the west coast!

Cheers!

I think you’ll be fine....remember the longer wheelbase on the F55 will ride smoother as well regardless of suspension setup.

My 2016 MCS has DDC and think MID and GREEN modes are in normal/regular suspension setting. Let's call it a 0 on the scale. Then when user goes to Sport, then that adds +10% to the stiffness/handling. If then user dials it back to MID, then stiffness goes back to original 0. I have never seen -10% unless you compare it to sport mode, then it might sound like -10%.
