F55/F56 Crankshaft Bearing Recall - Can it wait for 2000 kms?
Crankshaft Bearing Recall - Can it wait for 2000 kms?
I just got the notice about the crankshaft bearing recall and would like to know if I can put it off for another 2000 kms - until my next scheduled maintenance. I have a feeling if I call the service center, they'll say to do the maintenance now, which I don't really want to do early.
I have a 2015 F56 manual One with 22000 kms.
Any opinions?
Thanks.

If they find metal shavings/endplay, motor gets swapped out from what I hear...think they are just trying to limit the damage. If your car is affected, you might be without it for several days, and possibly have follow-up items for them to adjust...so might be ok to do an extra trip.
Now... don't know the extent of the issue on your car, the mini-one f56, it not sold in the us, so we don't typically hear much about it, but I am guessing it the same recall as the regular f56.

ZippyNH is right on--if there's any sign of damage, they will replace the entire engine. So if you're worried about doing damage in the next 2000km, there's nothing much to worry about. If there's damage, they owe you a new engine, and if there isn't, the 2000km didn't make any difference.
More importantly, you want to make sure you get a loaner car when you take her in, and do it at a convenient time. We were hard up against a road trip, and they had to scramble to swap our engine. Everything went fine, except that the mechanic cross-threaded the battery post, and the car started throwing codes, and going in and out of Limp Home Mode, 1000 miles into the journey, so we spent several days of our vacation driving back and forth to a MINI dealer 90 minutes away, while they diagnosed and fixed the problem with a new battery.
That said, you're talking km and not miles--my response is based on American assumptions about warranty service, etc. Your mileage may vary.

Service adviser suggested that it's the kind of thing that will run into the 60K miles before failing, and then take the whole engine with it.
Since they have to open the engine, do they also do an oil/oil filter change?
What I'm getting at - If I combine my scheduled maintenance with the recall, can I pass some of the maintenance expenses on to them?
BTW, I just called the service center and they said that I cannot wait, that it has to be done ASAP.
Also, I'm not sure that I trust them to tell me if there is damage. Why do I get the feeling that I'm going to run into problems AFTER the warranty period expires? (All of this after I got rid of my R50 because of I was afraid of the CVT failure issues.)

Bring it in if you worry. This motor, tranny and car of a very different desgin.
But there will always be expenses that are not warrenty items...wish I could say no...but fact of life.
If your confidence level is still very low at the end of the warrenty period, I guess it's time to move on...but imo give it some time.
Many folks that spend lots of time on boards read of the bad for hours, and become a bit OCD, or worry a bit.

They will have to do an oil change whether you get a new engine or not. They have to drop the oil pan to inspect it and they will change the filter so they can inspect it for metal bits. If it has to do with or is caused by this recall there should be no cost to you.
They replaced my engine and rear shocks and it didn't cost me a dime. I'm taking it in next week so they can replace some parts on the front suspension. Since they are dropping the sub-frame to do the work they will need to do an alignment also. Again, there will be no charge for me.
Take it in and let them get it done.

Thanks for the input.
