The effect of lighter wheels on WHP

Dyno results are pretty telling.

http://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w2...orsepower.html

Something most guys overlook when searching for more performance.

I recently swapped out my 17" Tentacles w/ Hankook RF's for a set of Enkei RPF1 and Conti Summer DW. I shaved 6lbs from each wheel and another 2 lbs for each tire...so 8 lbs per corner X4 =32 lbs. overall of unsprung rotating weight.

Tentacles 21.2 lbs per, Enkei's 15.2 lb per. Tires, I think (can't recall the exact weight but know there was a 2 lb. diff) the Hankooks weighed 21lbs ea, and the Conti's weigh 19 lbs ea.

Car is super lively compared with the other tire/wheel set. When I get on the throttle, car seems more responsive and rides/handles much better (less noisy too w/ the Conti's).

I had the exact same wheel/tire set up as you did and went with the Conti Summer DW with 18.5 lb wheels so I only managed to shave about 5 lbs per corner and love the new feel. Can't imagine 8 lbs per corner! 😉

Not the greatest shots, but at least it shows the entire car.

Wheels have some racing heritage too. Pix added.

good enough. thanks! i've become addicted to the track and am looking for some wheels. it's between the RPF1's and the RSM9's but the RSM9's are over 400 per...freaking nuts.

only thing holding me back is if i get them in 18, could i fit a BBK..

On my gen1 I found that lighter wheels were so much better I kept my car on 16' and even 15 (no bbk)...
I put a set of heavy 17 rims on once...made the entire car feel like a bus....was more stable going straight, but did not want to turn, even with higher performance rubber....
Light rims on MINI's go back to the classics...the 10' mini-lites!! We're popular for a reason!
What's old is new again!!

+1

You can really feel it on the MINI on the track, multiple time. 15 and 16" light wheels are preferred over the heavy OEM 17" + wheels.

I stuck with 17". Cutting 3.5 pounds per wheel and 3 pounds per tire with my summer setup vs Tentacle spokes and all season tires I use for winter. Very noticeable on the twisty back roads.

Looks great. Was thinking of picking up a set. Stock height/suspension?

Yep. He's still got the stock DDC. I'm trying to talk him into springs.

Speaking of springs, any preference? (ie. H&R, NM, Eibachs). Noticed you went with 17s which is what I'm interested at as well, keep the weight down, less expensive tires. Would you happen to have a picture of your setup? Sorry, new to the F56 but not so new to Minis/BMWs. Thanks.

Here's a quick picture of Elle from when I first I got her a couple of weeks ago. Elle was an ex from my college days, the car reminded me of her, feisty yet loving when she wants to be lol.

I haven't had time to install all my suspension goodies yet. I have a set of springs, rear sway bar, end links, and adjustable rear control arms, all by NM. Hope to get everything done after MOTD. Cravenspeed makes good stuff too. I have their "Big Pair" already installed on my car.

If things go according to plan, when I'm done I'll also have JCW brakes and 17" NM RSe05 wheels. I can't wait either.

EDIT:
TaDaa.
Even lighter!

The 16x8s on my rx7 weight about 16lbs. As a test I installed my friend's 25lb wheels once. What a massive and ugly difference it made. My gf's Mini S has a curb weight about as much as my rx7. So pretty sure the butt dyno will feel a difference with any significant weight changes.

I will probably put 16" sparco wheels for 16lb each. No torque steering on f56 is unbelievable having experienced r56 s.

Hope I don't derail this thread...looking for info on where to get that gas cap, the checkered graphics, cept in red and the side blinker graphic. They look great and I am wanting them for my black F56.

Thanks

When I go from the heavy OEM 17" wheels to my 15 & 16" race re71's it makes the car "angry" for lack of a better term

When I autocross the turn in is a lot better, acceleration is better it kinda makes the car "angry" for lack of a better term it really does feel like a better car

my race tires are also shorter, to go 60 I have to have the speedo at like 67
