I'm picking my car up next month ('16 fJCW) and have a couple questions about the Y-Connector (my MA is clueless).
1.) Do they still make the Y-Connector, and if so, do they make it with the apple "Lightning plug" (part #?)?
2.) Is the Y-Connector still needed in order to playback video from an iTouch (6th gen)?
3.) Is the Y-Connector included, or do I need to purchase it seperately? (It was included in my '11 MCS).
4.) I had a loaner a couple weeks ago, and had my iPod hooked up with just the normal Apple USB cord. The max volume was CONSIDERABLY lower in the F56 than in my R56. Could this be the result of not having/using the Y-Connector?
You do not need the Y-cable to play back video. You can't play back video while the car is in motion unless you do some coding.
Some early 2014 cars had a cable, but they are uncommon.
There are some menu items you can fiddle with, like Auxiliary Volume, but an iPod never seems very loud. I do think you would get more volume plugged into the Aux, I'm going to try something this week, I'll let you know.
Got a similar situation. Our new R60 came with the Y adapter to the 30 pin iPod plug. The old iPod died and was replaced with a new one with the 'lightening' plug. Apple has a lightening to 30 pin adapter for $29.00 at: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD...30-pin-adapter
FOR THE R56 - R61 Gen 2 MINI : ** Not F56 / F55 ***
Also there used to be a Music Only & Media Only Y cable . They are now all Music & Media combined so you just buy the same one no matter what options you have for the lightening cable. Now for the 30 pin its still separated.

Thanks!
The F56 does not use a Y-Connector.
Yes they still make a Y-Connector, only for 2nd gen models.

Can you elaborate on this a bit? The side by side usb/aux input in the F56 is exactly like that in my R56. I'm guessing you don't need the "aux" piece in the F56 like you did the R56?
Will video play through just the USB connection? (I realize the car needs to be parked).
I'm hoping the "aux" input of the Y-Connector will resolve the low volume issue of the iPod, with just the USB connected.
ECST, have you tried both in a R56. My dealer gave me one from a Countryman and it does not work in my R56
Really, Yes I have the 30 pin media on right now and works great in the R58 w/ MINI connected. Check and make sure the phone is updated and the software for the MINI connected or NON MINI connected is updated.

1.) They do, but you do NOT need the Y-cable for the F-series MINIs. A normal, white Apple cable will do.
2.) Video playback directly from an iDevice is no longer supported. This is also true of the 2nd gen MINIs for Lightning equipped devices. Analog video out was removed from the spec. If you have a F-series MINI with the XL headunit, though, video playback IS supported directly from video files on a USB drive plugged into the USB port.
3.) Not included because they are not necessary
4.) I've always found it a little quieter than the radio, but as of iOS 9, make sure volume is turned up all the way on your iDevice as they use separate volume controls.

The only reason the AUX port is there on the new MINIs is to support devices without a USB out.
The Y-cable was needed on the 2nd gen MINIs because they didn't support digital audio out for iDevices. They used the USB port for getting song info, playlist info, etc. and the AUX port was where the audio actually came in.

1.) I bought the red/black lightning cable from ESC.....should be good to go.
2.) No wonder my new iTouch won't playback video in my 2nd gen. Thanks.
3.) Finally realized this after getting educated here.
4.) I fixed the iPod volume issue. I just got a brand new 6th gen, and didn't realize there were more "volume" options that could be tweaked, over the previous 4th gen. I had. Turned off "sound check" and the volume almost doubled. Should be good to go now when the F56 gets here.
