2014 Mini S Sport Mode surges?

I have a 6 spd manual and noticed occasional (25% of the time) surges, almost like bad gas, while accelerating only in Sport Mode. It appears to happen in any gear, rpm or speed. Mostly notice during hard acceleration lower gears. In Normal Mode everything is fine doing the same driving habits. I only been using Chevron 91oct.. I figure if it was bad gas it would be noticed in all Modes, but it doesn't, only in Sport Mode. I had one service rep. said it was normal. I love Sport Mode other than this annoying feel. A fast hiccup while accelerating. It doesn't happen right after a shift, but during acceleration between shifts.

I find the same thing. Basically, have quit using Sport on the highway. Any change in throttle pressure and it surges. "Mid" seems perfect for 90% of my driving.

My '14 MCS does none of that in Sport mode. Acceleration is strong and smooth. However, as others have said, I find I do 90% of my driving in Regular mode, but never Green.

I have the exact same issue. Also with a manual.

Me too. Manual. 100% in sport mode. Very annoying.

I have a F56 and I looked at the fuel usage graph in TorquePro. In Sport mode the fuel usage jumps pretty steep like in digital steps even with feather footing while Mid mode is less steep than that and Green mode very smooth slope (hence it feels sluggish). I use mostly Mid mode now.

I don't know about the surge in highways though. Not enough experience.

edit: I may experienced this in the graph because it polls the sensors at certain rate, and in Sports mode I'm actually accelerating faster so maybe the graph is all not that important.

Can you describe what you mean by surge? I have occasionally noticed brief irregularities in acceleration but not specific to sport mode.

I have also noticed very brief surges in Sport Mode on my F56 S. Lasting perhaps a second, which is why I also attributed them to bad gas. I'm hoping that this is a software issue which MINI will eventually fix.

When you dip the throttle hard while cruising on the highway it almost feels like a misfire then it accelerates I thought it was bad fuel and used a bottle of techron to clean out the system.

Turbo lag? Are you dropping a gear or two before stomping hard on the throttle? If not, could be "bogging" a bit?

I have noticed this same type of momentary hitch in acceleration while test driving both Audi a4 and vw gti. I don't think it's turbo lag because I never experienced this before in any of my previous 3 turbo cars. Those cars were all Japanese, but that is most likely just coincidence.

Definitely not Turbo lag. I'm cruising in 6th on the highway and just go to accelerate and this occurs. No downshifting. I wonder if it's an issue with the factory program at this point?

This doesn't sound right. I have not experienced this in 7.5 years of driving Mini turbos, both manual and auto trans.

Well, if you are not downshifting on the hiway in 6th gear, and you hammer it, it could bog a bit. The 6th gear is an "overdrive" gear and meant for high speed cruising, not rapid acceleration. Downshifting would be preferable and might eliminate your problem. Try it.

I was reading some stuff and found this post mentioning EGR valves and excess air causing this jolt. Maybe it's related to the surge that you guys (and I'll probably experience this some day) are experiencing.

I've got mine in the shop for this now, also in for popping out of 1st gear. We will see how the surging problem is taken care of. Tried and tried to take a tech for a test drive to show him but he said no need for it. Been there since Monday and of course they said they have not been able to make it happen. I drove 2 hrs to drop it off so I'll be pissed if nothing is done with that and the transmission problem.

Update: took my MCS in for the 10k service today. I advised the tech I was having a surging issue in sport mode blah blah blah. Bingo the tech took my car for a ride and duplicated the problem. He was able to update the software and that did the trick. Not sure if it's me but the car does feels quicker and pulls harder. Side note the silly Hp and torque gauge in the car is pegged at full throttle in 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear

My Mini-S occasionally does that. I only drive in Sport mode so I cannot comment if it happens in Mid mode. It actually happens so infrequently that I have accepted it. And I'm finicky with my cars. LOL.

Yea I'd like to know that also. Mines been in the shop for 2 weeks for the transmission and the surge problem.

Not dumb at all. You have to use ESYS car programming software to find out the software version. It'll be something like F056-14-07-506 (meaning July 2014 version of that month being 506). And then if you look deeper, each of the 12 or more ecu modules have their own versions.

Thank you.. I do not own the programming software

2014 Mini S Sport Mode surges?

Fixed!! Took it to the dealer yesterday. This was on the invoice: Ran ISTA test, found code 1BC119 - Gear Sensor not plausible. Ran test plan ABL-DIT-AT1214-BX-GNG; found vehicle due for update programming. Original integration at F056-14-03-502.
Programmed/Coded complete vehicle to current software level.
