F55/F56 Amazing Mileage!
Amazing Mileage!
Just returned from a 500 mile, each way, trip, and my mileage was above and beyond expectations!
Drove my F56 Justa with manual, in Green mode, and recorded 45-46 mpg the whole way. On my last fill-up, it gave me a range of 508 miles, based on this.

The same thing happened to me recently except halfway through the tank I switched it into sport mode and well.. yeah lol. In all seriousness though I am really happy with the numbers I've been achieving. My avg is 37-38 which is 25%+ better than my GTI was.
Out of curiosity were you driving nomally? At the speed limit and not a lot of coasting?
I would say that it was very normal driving, except in Green Mode, and all highway.
I'm averaging 40MPG in my Cooper S, pretty impressed as I've only done about 300 miles and haven't reset it since I got it...
I live in London too so a large amount of driving has been crawling through traffic...
I did do about 200 miles of motorway driving though...and whacked it on cruise at 70 in green mode.

The 3 cylinder is amazing!
I've seen a trip avg as high as 50.3 mpg in green mode....on a trip between LA and San Diego

F56 in Green mode employs 'hypermiling' on its own. When in green mode, when you're not actively accelerating and are over 30mph, the transmission and engine de-couple, the engine reverts to idle, and the car coasts. If you've set the cruise, it'll do this as often as it can (pretty much any flat surface or slight decline). The cruise even lets you drop 1mph or so during the coast and then re-engages to return you back up to speed.
Its fun to watch, set the dash display to current MPG, and it'll be trucking along at 35mpg range and then suddenly jump up to 99.9 and the RPMs will fall to ~800.
So if you're traveling somewhere that is mostly a decline the entire way, it can coast A LOT and get you amazing mileage. I bet that's what happened for Thumper?

Maybe I'm missing something, have BMW finally solved the MPG language barrier?

Yes I've got an automatic. I think it is specific to automatic as the owner's manual states that they car has to be in D for it to work. Strangely the standard still gets a better EPA mileage rating doesn't it? I don't think green mode is accounted for in those numbers.
I asked him if they're done testing their Coopers, and he told me the final reports are being written now. Unfortunately, their Justa is an automatic model, so it won't be a direct corroboration of my experience. I asked him, so as to make sure they do their own highway mileage testing too, which I think is pretty standard practice for them.
It seems clear, though, that the F56 easily bests the official EPA numbers promised, and by "real life" owners, too! An added bonus in my book.
(And yes, Sepp, I am US-based.)

Here's something in the press release from last year (3rd paragraph)
I love getting up to speed on the highway and allowing the car to coast... then watching the Tach fall down to idle as it decouples.

Nope!

I have just about 1000 miles on my F56 MCS manual. I am seeing just a little above 29mpg average right now with mixed driving. I have about a 25 mile commute to work. When on the freeway I drive in green mode but will use sport mode when out and about the city streets which may explain my lower average. I guess if I wanted great gas mileage I could have bought a Justa or an automatic but I bought this car to have fun and I really like driving around in sport mode for spirited driving. I thought I would give my 2 cents on mpg when not driving it practically every day.
Not sure how accurate the onboard dash instant MPG display is...
But I'm seeing 99.9 MPG too often when driving my MCS auto, way more often than any other vehicles I've driven with the instant MPG reading feature on the dash
Regardless how accurate it might be... seeing 99.9 MPG makes me very happy!
BTW, the dash shows 36.6 MPG average for my daily 60 mile round trip commute in Los Angeles traffic. Terrific!

Switch out of green mode, go to mid, and the coasting is disabled. See my post a bit above on how coasting works in green mode on autos.
