I decided to pay someone to model me some key fobs. Time to get printing and see how they work

Great work. Good luck. My neighbor got too busy.. Frankly i'm annoyed. Especially since I put the funds down for the materials. Let us know how it goes.

They're all an improvement. Honestly, I don't care what's embossed on the side, just as long as it's thin and it fits. ;-)

I'm with Darex, I'm in if they fit. :-) Please keep all of us posted, especially those of us interested in buying a couple of pairs.

Yeah I'm test printing one now. I'm not convinced my printer can handle the detail in the emblems, but for sure the plain and the one with MINI on the side. If it works I'll work on getting a price figured out.

VicSkimmer, I didn't mention it before, but the models look awesome! I'm in for a couple of plain ones should that be the easiest way for you to print sturdy and durable ones.

I really like the new key especially since it comes with a nice accessory!!! In truth it looks like they fit in the same fob reader used by the dealer ship. Since I have both old and new fobs at home I'll do a comparison when I can. Considering that the car is now larger it makes sense the fob be larger as well.

Well those curved designs are too complex for my printer, even with copious amounts of support. We'll see what he comes up with next. I could always cut it down the middle and glue them together but I would rather not have a seam if possible. I guess I could make a mold to use at that point.

that sucks man. hope you can figure it out. i finally heard back from my neighbor. needless to say i'm a little bothered as he's gone MIA. finally told me that with school starting tomorrow, the kids will be away and he'll be able to focus. hope this means i finally get a sample. you're ahead as you have a sample already! lets see what he comes up with. let us know how you progress.

If we had a mold, it would be an easy thing to make all kinds of variants. Getting a mold is the hard part! That's an acceptable solution.

I'd much rather be able to print them if possible, that way I can use my fancy wood filament.

It's a Lulzbot Mini. I've got some wood infused PLA to try out. I'm going to test print myself a wedding band with it first to get a feel for how it works.

A new tack?

I just had an idea for a new approach to this issue of the bulky/ugly fob. What do you guys think of this idea? Is it possible?

What if we just lifted the circuit board from our fob, and stuck it inside one of these, and then had the blank key cut to match our existing key [or not!]? I think it'd work provided the circuit board is close enough in shape. That's the big if! Of course, our key fob is built like Fort Knox, and I can't figure out how to open it down to that level for a gander.

This thing has so many undercuts and oddities, I gave-up even trying to mold it. I suspect it will be a real challenge to 3D-print as a solid, single piece. Even BMW made it out of two pieces!

May need to be CNCed?

Would be cool to have one made out of aluminum....

That would most likely drastically weaken the signal strength for using the key fob, much like having an aluminum case on your phone cuts down your cell reception by more than half.
