Terrific job!

Do you think they might be printed using colored plastic or is black the only option?

I'm in the process of moving and my printer isn't set up right now. I honestly prefer MarcoPolo's design. But if you're interested I'll probably put it up on shapeways once I've had a chance to test it out thoroughly.

I wish I had the nerve to bust-open my FOB, or at least see one opened, to know if the circuit board resemble's BMW's in shape. Internet searches have failed me, thus far. There must be a way to open it!

I took mine apart all the way down but it appears the housing holding the board is glued or sealed. I could not find any more tabs holding it together. I wish someone would prove me wrong though, but I tried for a good while to get it apart more and couldn't find a way.

Just noticed this idea now! Great.
One thought though - and maybe it has been thought of...when I take my car to the dealer and he scans the key for onboard info he places it in a holder that is the shape of the key. The new shape would not fit in the holder....maybe it could be held in place but they always seem so busy when you drop the car off.

Well, any alternative housing has to be much smaller than the existing one, so I'm sure it'd read fine. Don't forget, that the previous key was much smaller than the one we have now and the one they use accommodates both of them. There's always the spare key ;-)

I think maybe it's time for someone else to pick up the baton here, maybe partnering with a vendor to make it happen?

I know. I thought y'all were set with MarcoPolo's solution but if he hasn't pulled through I'll get on it.

I ordered a prototype from Shapeways. As long as it fits right when it comes in they'll be up for sale They'll be 2 pieces (just like the stock key fob surround) so you'll have to glue them together, but that's all the assembly it'll take.

I'd be happy to let you guys order them now but I just can't in good conscience till I know for sure they fit right. Clearances have to be just right on these things.
