Help! has anyone removed/replaced wheel bearings before?
Hey guys,
Long story short, got the JCW BBK and went to install (2016 Mini Cooper S F55), unknowing to me, my torque wrench no longer clicks and I ended up over tightening the rotor bolt that holds the rotor to the hub.
Screw was stripped as well as the mount hole. I came to terms with having to shell out $300 for a new front wheel bearing.
However, I'm not sure of the install procedure. I removed the four bolts in the back but there is a collar bolt that I think I also need to remove?
I tried to find instructions and found this: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...ing/1Vncs8NL6Y
Do I really need a custom tool like shown in the link above to replace the bearing? Is there anything else I can do? Has anyone done this or have a DIY that I can follow?
I also found this link which just says to press the brake pedal down all the way but not much more info: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...kle/1VnXjwG7My

Help!
The two procedures are similar, just need to make sure the hub doesn’t rotate when trying to remove the collar bolt. Seems the easiest technique would be use if and assistant to press the brake pedal to hold the hub.
that bolt that holds the rotor to the hub is totally un necessary ... it just holds the rotor in place while the wheel is off and provides no 'strength' to the brake system.
Many folks have trashed the bolt trying to get it off when replacing rotors and just left it off. Simply be careful that the rotor is seated flat when you put the wheel back on. It is the wheel bolts and the wheel that hold the rotor in place for braking purposes.

Thanks guys,
Very interesting capt_bj, I didn't know that. Yeah it seemed short for a bolt that was really important.
Glad to know that even if I stripped it, I can still proceed with the install and have functioning brakes.
Cheers guys

Meaning your brake pedal will go to the floor while trying to stop if/when your wheel loosens on the road.
You don't need to replace the whole wheel bearing for one stripped bolt stuck in there. You can drill it out or use a back-off kit to get that bolt out. And if the thread is messed up, you can re-tap it with a slightly larger hole with new thread pattern and make do. Just gotta remember to use a larger bolt with the correct pattern in the future when dealing with this hub alone.
