Plastic Key Cover on Door Handle

So, over all, the fit and finish of my car has been pretty good. I have however had a couple of issues. When I lift up the shelf in the storage package, the plastic mount that holds the shelf up always detaches when I close the shelf. Annoying but minor, however last night the little plastic cover that exposes the key hole popped off the door handle last night and will not reattach securely.

Went into the dealer this morning and they just nodded and said, yeah there is a bulletin out on this and unfortunately there is no fix in place for you yet. Figure I'll super glue it back on for the mean time but has anyone else had issues with this? What a stupid design employed there...

No storage package here, but haven't had the keyhole cover issue yet. I'm hoping that it is secure enough that it won't pop off while driving. At least thanks to you I know what to tell the service people should it happen to me.

Haven't had either happen yet...

Super glue? Seems extreme! There is a reason that pops off, it'll suck if your key battery dies and you cannot get into the car because you superglued that closed. (Is there one on the passengers side too? Guess that'd work still)

I tested taking the key cover off just to see how it worked. No issue putting it back on. It seems to be secure. Instead of superglue, maybe use a little silicone. Might be a little easier to remove should the need arise. Use just a dab. Should not need much.

I am not enamored with the new handle mechanism. I think the old system was much nicer. Having said that, this keyhole cover situation is ridiculous. I am totally going to preemptively use some silicone, as suggested here, to make sure it doesn't fall off on its own. My car arrives this week.

I was talking with another looker on the lot yesterday about the keyhole cover. He popped it off a car out of curiosity and was startled saying, Oh wow, that came off easy. He then put it back on, brushed up against the handle looking at something else and it just fell off again. There was another car on the lot already missing it on the driver side. I thought maybe it was intentional to demo, but now I think probably not.

I popped mine off by inserting the key in the slot from underneath. I was really testing the alarm system, as it is supposed to sound when the key is used (could not get it to go off by just bouncing the car some). Anyway, I was able to pop the cover back in with no issue and it seems secure. Maybe if it is removed in some other manner, it broke something that holds it in place. I seem to remember a prong or two on one end that had to hook in.

That would make a lot of sense and I hope it is the case. However, it still shouldn't be so easy to pop off the wrong way. He really wasn't trying very hard, just kind of pushing on it. I don't know what the little square covers are for on the bottom of back bumper, but one car is missing one of those too.

Yip, same problem here. Mine popped off when I was at the dealers and will not reattach!

I've currently stuck in back on with some double sided tape.

I had no mess. I was judicious with my siliconing. Now, it's not a concern.

Sounds like a sticky situation.

I love my new 2014 Hardtop (now called the 2-door) but it does have a few design features that seem to have been rushed and not quality checked during the design process. One of them is the door handle. The plastic key cover on my door handle fell off repeatedly (see attached picture). The dealer replaced the entire door handle and the new one is only marginally better.

The '14 loaner we have is already missing the cover. If ours feel loose I'll definitely be putting some two sided tape or something on it.

I was having the same problem a couple of months ago. 3M double sided trim tape works wonders. No problems since.

I picked up mine yesterday, and while driving home stopped by walmart. While locking the door, I remembered this thread so I touched the key cap cover on the door handle, and it just fell off so easily! I thought they would have solved it by now, but no. I wonder what genius thought that was a great idea.

I put it in my pocket, and when I got home, I applied a tiny bit rice size of silicone caulk (usually for bathrooms and windows) on one the left side and stuck it back in. I'll have to see if it stays put when I get home today.

Who cares if it falls off? I don't think my 2006 R56 had a key cover at all. You just stick the key in there and turn it.

The previous generation had door handles that were designed to look nice with the key hole exposed. The new ones look nice with the cover on but they look "broken" with the cover off. See the picture I posted earlier in this thread.

Agreed--I've already had one replaced, and the replacement fell off when I shut the door one day. Fortunately it fell on pavement so I heard it. Seems to be secure...for the moment. I've never had occasion to intentionally remove it.

That's a glaring error in an otherwise well designed car.

Stupid thing popped out again today. I closed the door and it just fell on the asphalt. I'll have to re-do silicone glue or something. This is really stupid of MINI.

I have my 2015 F 56 for 3 weeks and I am heading to the dealer for my second Key Hole cap.
I will leave if off until warmer weather and use some silicone.

Do they give you a new one, or do you have give them your old one and get it exchanged?

If this falls off one more time I'm going to go to the dealer and ask for a new one (be it a replacement or a spare).

My salesman took one off a car in the lot. Those little parts sell for $38.00. It seems Mini is aware of the problem and made changes to the newer 2015. I was told there should be a fix coming out for the cars they have the problem

The 2014 F56 my wife had as a loaner was missing the cover when we got it.

Her cover fell off on her 2015 the other day and luckily she found it a day later. I'm waiting til it warms up so I can try some sort of adhesive or tape.

$38?! Geez, Louise--could they have made it more expensive for such a trivial part?

(Yeah, I suppose they could have stamped it "Ferrari.")
