Can wheel spacers be used?

Greetings! I have the opportunity to get rims for free (20inch), but I think ET may be 34mm. If that is the actual case, could 10mm spacers be used to get into the “normal” 44mm range as it exists with the OEM 17inch rims? Or am I missing something and overthinking?

If you are starting at 34mm, adding 10mm spacers would take the effective offset to 24mm.

Thank you for reply...so no go? Just try rims as they are and see if anything rubs? Only reason I am wondering is that I remember seeing rims at ECS tuning for the minis with ET of 34 or so.

I believe the OEM F54 Clubman wheels are 17x7.5 +54 or an 18x8 +57

What is the width of the wheel? Also, not sure what size tire you would put on a 20" wheel....

This tool is pretty helpful when comparing wheel and tire sizes:

Good question on width. I’ll check tonight and post answer. I know I’m going a bit into uncharted territory with the 20’s...but they are free. The bolt pattern is 5x112, so that’s a start.

On the size you will be ok. The New F54 and F60 will fit the big wheels, Make sure 66.6CB. Lots more room then other older MINIs. just have to watch brake clearance if you have BBKs or aftermarkets and that offset.

Thank you for the encouraging news ECStuning! I have a 2017...would that be considered “new”? What’s the 66.6CB? I’ve tried to do a search, just haven’t been able to find good info on 20in wheels and potential issues.

Ok. I have to correct the size. The wheels are 19inch, have 255/35-19 tires now. So according to ECStuning, diameter will fit. But will the offset of 35 work? Where on rim would I find the exact offset? Currently they are on a 1996 M-B SL500. They are aftermarket and I didn’t see anything for a 19inch rim, just 17 and 18. Any ideas if they will fit?

What is the width of the wheel? I think you’ll be tight with anything over 9”. And that tire size seems very wide for an F54.

Sometimes “free” isn’t always worth it...

That refers to the center bore of the wheels, where they meet the hub. If the 19" wheels have a larger center bore, is is possible a hub centering ring might be used. If the new wheels CB are smaller than 66.6, machining will be needed.

The offset difference means the new wheels center line would be about 20 mm further from the hub mating surface than the OEM wheel - which is 3/4 of an inch pretty near.

Cheers,

Charlie

Thank you so much for the information, Charlie!! I’ll start measuring things this week and see what’s what. More things to think about than I anticipated!
