Hi All,

I wanted to see if you have any recommendations for Intakes. I was looking for the 3 following but only the last two mention that will fit a F54 Mini.

1. Mishimoto MMAI-MIN-14WRD
2. NM Eng. Hi-Flow Intake Kit
3. K&N 69-2026TTK Air Intake

I would really appreciate your thoughts and recommendations

Thank you,
MrMaxi

So, there are other threads floating around regarding intakes -- lots of opinions.

Bottom line seems to be that if a change in sound is what you're after, or you want a different look under the bonnet, changing the intake will give you more noise and, if you spend enough, will make a pretty view in the engine compartment.

K & N has Cooper S dyno data on their web site but it is important to note that they did their testing with the BONNET OPEN, allowing cool air into the engine compartment.

You will note that the outside air intake set up on the JCW is the same as the S, and the general view is that the OEM airbox is sufficient for maximum required airflow. Since it is a turbocharged intake, there is little, if any gain, and if there is any, it might well be offset by changes in air density if the add-on intake draws from inside the engine compartment.

Some feel that, as part of a total system, including exhaust, downpipe, performance tuning chip, and intake, the intake might make more of a noticeable difference.

The other great debate is where the intake air is captured. If you live where it gets warm and stop and go is part of your usual drive, then warm engine compartment air is a big consideration.

I will add that I have done an intake mod on my 1980's-era V-12 Jaguar and it makes a difference. On hard acceleration I get a nice low growl but the BIG difference is that I created outside air ducting and enlarged the very small diameter OE intake silencer nozzles and added K&N filters. The V-12's run notoriously hot and it really cooks under the hood so the outside intake and the higher air volume eliminated the pre-ignition and did add noticeable power. But that is on an old school engine/intake -- nothing like the multi-sensor, turbocharged, computer-designed engine management system on a modern MINI.

Bottom line: Different sound, better appearance are guaranteed. Performance improvements -- well, only your butt dyno can tell you.

2017All4, Thank you for the useful information.

I am more concerned about the fitment. K&N states that their intake fits the Non-S F54, but I am more interested to see if there is any difference in the box size between S and Non-S F54 Minis.

Bottom line, IMO all three intakes above are similar in sound and "performance".

[EDIT]

I found the following information on ECS's website. Even though it is for a different brand, it mentions that BMW uses the same airbox.

The Forge Motorsport intake for the F54, F55, F56, and F57 generation of MINI has been developed specifically for the 2.0 petrol turbo engine from the Cooper S and Cooper JCW, though it will also fit the Cooper 1.5 petrol turbo, as BMW use the same factory airbox.

I always consider the horsepower/$ cost when making a modification. When you calculate the cost per horsepower for the K&N option as this is the cheapest one currently, it will cost you about $25 per HP and this is under ideal conditions. Cost will increase if price rises or temperature under hood affects HP output. If you are willing to spend more than $25/HP then go for it. When compared to a mod like the Dinan Tuner which goes for $300 and gives you a potential of 30 HP more, than to me $10 per HP is a much better mod to do. If you are looking for cosmetic improvements under the hood than this argument is spurious.....

OP wants to know about which intake, not if they do anything or if it makes sense financially. Unfortunately these kinds of questions always lead to lectures, so I won't go that path.

In my eyes they are all pretty similar, if it was my car I'd go with the lower priced one.

I just put this on my F55S: http://www.burgertuning.com/B58_340i...ce_intake.html

I don't see why it wouldn't fit on a non-S. My wife has an F60 Justa and the airbox and everything looks exactly the same as my S.

GUILTY as charged. I'll try to be better.

FWIW, K&N, which scoops inside air but is positioned with a baffle to try and snag air from the factory outside air scoops when the car is moving, gives numbers. Most others make general claims. Though often more $, my bias is always toward the ones that scoop outside air even when the car isn't moving.
