Electrical Seat heaters TOO warm
Seat heaters TOO warm
Maybe it's just me, but the seat heaters on low and high seam way too warm to me. Anyway to tone them down? I rode in a coworkers new VW and it was adjustable from 1-10. Anyone have any good ideas how to cool it down a bit? Different fuse, add resisters inline, etc??? Yes, I did a search, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks, Joe

There was a Technical Service Bulletin about it. Dealers can adjust the temperature with resistors for too hot or too cold seats. If your car is still under warranty, it should be covered. Alldata.com used to have the TSB document on their website but now you have to purchase their service to access it.
You need a tougher butt. You must be a desk jockey.
Yep, they're pretty darn warm.
I like them on the low setting only and even then, I turn the heating system down to about 68 degrees. That combo is very comfortable to me. Try it.
Might have to wait until next winter though... it's almost Spring !! FINALLY.

Thanks all,
I'm due for a oil change under free service in 1400 miles anyway, I'll just have them do it then. Thanks for the attachment cristo. And yes, I do have to sit at a desk :impatient , me and my red stapler

I just got the adapter to use when the seats are too warm (as mine are).
In case anyone is interested, I checked it out with my volt-ohm-meter
and determined that it places a 27K resistor across the yellow and
blue wires. Well, they're blue and yellow on the adapter, on the
Bentley Manual, it's probably pin 2 and pin 1 (white/green and green/violet,
respectively) on the wires in the car.
This will alter the signal from the temperature sensor in the seat heater that tells the
heating circuit how hot the seat is and when to apply current or not to the heating
elements.
I suspect that the one used when the seats aren't warm enough probably
uses a resistor in series interrupting the blue or yellow wire on the adapter
(whichever one corresponds to pin 2 - white/green).
See 3 posts back for the TSB about this.
It's too cold and slushy and dark to put it in now.
After I put the adapter in I'll report on the change in seat temps.

Great info, as I'm out of warranty I think I will need to find myself a 27K resistor!
Where might I be able to mail order this adapter (if I want to save myself some time)? My dealership is over an hour away...

You can order from Classic MINI -- just tell them the part number in the TSB. Your own dealer may be willing to put it on a credit card and mail it to you (my dealer offered to do this once for a special order part, but I'm just 10 minutes away).
Only about $20 and $8 shipping from the former.
Part number 61 10 0 152 025.
Easy to do yourself. It's the small white connector near the inner seat rail
that you have to patch into.
Don't fool with the Airbag connectors.
Look at the TSB in post # 5 above.
Not sure how to move this but I realized after posting that another thread in the 2nd gen section linked to this. I have a R56.
I recently had my driver's seat leather (back only) cover replaced and now the seat heater barely gets warm. The original seat cover and the current passenger seat warms very nice and hot (on the high leve). I actually like this because as someone else stated, I just turn it off typically after I am nice and warm. By the way, I was told that seat heating elements are integrated into the seat covers, seems ridiculous to me especially if we have to replace a heating element after warranty expires. The cost is probably 10 times more that it would need to be.
Anyway, I am puzzeled as to why my seat is now not warming as the original one did. The TSB only mentions 2 options, one for making hotter and one for making colder. This does not seem to provide much flexability for adjusting. Maybe its possible that the technician installed this part the wrong way?

I'm using the moss seat covers (look like space cloth), and the seat heaters work nicely right through them. They are thicker than the neoprene, so I suspect the heat should work Ok there too. I have not had the resistor put in, so the seat hearers are the original June 2002 build version. However, it takes noticably longer for the heat to kick up... a good 4 to 5 minutes instead of the 2 minutes in my other 2002 with no seat covers.
I know its an older post in this thread but I laughed when I saw it because I've done just that. Pizza in the passenger seat on High. maybe this should go in the things you don't know about your mini thread too.
I use position 1(low) then 3(off) myself. never know when I'll need the nuclear hot position 2
