help on routing a wire

I need to route a wire from the engine(near the intake) through the firewall and out to the driver's side of the interior. The wire is for a driving light switch that I'd like to mount on the blanking plate of my euro parcel shelf. I just don't know where it should go through the firewall. Any help and pictures would be great. I have an '05 S automatic if that makes any difference.

Here is a photo

at this link.... (first photo)

Top photo shows a rubber skirt washer thingy... if you look closely you will see a really large red wire, this comes from the battery in the back, there is also a wire harness coming thru, if you are careful you can cut the washer thingy and using a coat hanger or other snaking tool get the wire thru...

Good luck

What did you use for a switch that fits in the parcel shelf blank?

I'm having trouble finding one that fits.

Thanks,
Walt

Here's another thread with photos....

Look here. The photo with the thick red wire is from inside the passenger compartment. I used a hangar, cut at an angle, taped the wire to the hangar, and pushed it through the rubber of the bulk-head gasket. This makes a good weather tight seal as well. Good luck!

There's a grommet on the firewall on the driver's side that's about 1.5-2" in diameter as seen in the photo linked to above. Just punch a hole in it with an awl or icepick and push the wire through. It helps to have something stiff that you can the wire to to push it through, like a coathanger or heavy gauge wire, as someone suggested so you can get it far enough under the dash that you can get a hold of it.

A coat hanger works real well. Tape your wire to it and push thru the rubber grommet from the interior into the engine compartment. It will butt up against the windsheild wiper motor as i recall but you can work around behind it and take it out to the side. It is best if you have someone helping you and looking to see it emerge to give you final direction.

When it comes to electrical work and running wire in the car, I always have a coat hanger handy. Like many have said, there is a rubber gromet under the driver side dash. It is near the brake peddle. I have some wires running through there. The coat hanger works really well when it comes to fishing for wire. When you tape the wire to the coat hanger, make sure you tape the wire plus further up so that the wire does not get stuck onto anything. This will allow for a smooth job!
