Fabric over battery terminals ok?

I know, an odd topic, but I've been wondering... First, this is my set-up, exposed:

With the rear mat in place, and an old cut-up T-shirt over the battery, this is what I run with:

Anyone think that this might not be a good thing for the battery... with the shirt material touching both the positive and negative terminals?

I appreciate your thoughts!

You could try using a volt meter and see if you can get any kind of resistance measurement, but my guess is if it was conducting any current, it would burn through the material.

I was sort of thinking the same thing... I suppose I can always just put some electrical tape on the contact points, but if I don't need to.... Thanks!

No worries...

The cloth won't conduct, and since it's a sealed battery, you don't have to worry about the posts getting furry with corrosion like the standard car battery. BUT pokey metal things could short the terminals. Some plastic covers aren't a bad idea.... OR some electrical tape, or some of the liquid tape you were asking about in another thread.

Thanks Matt for the confirmation. I did indeed get some of that liquid tape tonight

And another idea, is to make a box around the unit and the carpet the box. You could use like you said in your previous post and use tape and tape of the terminals for extra safty. The only issue that the shirt would cause is if something came in contact with the battery i.e a piece of metal and shorted out the battery and cause a fire. But that would require something else touching the battery and not the shirt.

i've been thinking about some type of box that sticks through the carpet cut-out, but finding the perfect size has not been easy. I think I'll just put some electrical tape on the terminals... But, I really think that the shirt is not a factor, but what the heck... Thanks for your input!

Hmmm if you are handy, why not make something out of aluminum or even out of thin wood? But of course making sure the terminals are also covered.

If you make it out of Al....

make sure the terminals can't hit the metal. Put a piece of plastic or some electrical tape in there, or you may end up with something worse than the shirt!

I have a neat article on how to make fiberglass parts, so I was thinking of this being my first such project... The battery is a sealed lead acid type or SLA, so venting should not be a concern, I would think...
