NEWB Question regarding connecting OBD-II Readers

Probably the most basic question but I am 4 days into a 2010 Cooper Clubman and 2 days into OBD-II Scanners. Quick search did not yeild what I was looking for.

I have a DKAN cable and OBDLINK LX BT adapter. When I connect the OBDLINK BT adapter and start the car I can connect to it no problem. If I hit the start/stop button so car is off but accessories are powered up non of the apps will connect to the sensor. However there are some functions in the various apps I have tried (clearing a code) that say car should not be running but powered on.

I have tried just inserting FOB into dash and then connecting but does not seem to work. I have tried running the car then stopping and does not work. I have tried using the USB cable instead of BT adapter same result.

I have the Carly adapter coming today via Amazon and wondering if I will see same behavior and is it something I am doing wrong

Going to move you to the Gen2 area as our Gen1 cars don't have an ECU only an Abacus.

If you hit the start/stop button so the engine is not running but the accessories are on, this is not the correct mode. You want to put the key in and hit the start/stop button so that the engine doesn’t start but the car is in “Run” mode.
