Wireless OBD Readers and Apps

Looking for a wireless (Bluetooth or WI-fi) OBD reader to use for some data logging and might convert/overlay the center speed-o with an old tablet as a gauge cluster. What scanner are you guys using and what apps? I've seen DashCommand and Torque as the most popular. Thanks

I'm using DashCommand for the iPhone (6s) with a Vgate iCar 2 OBDII scan/reader in wi-fi mode. Very happy with this setup.

Awesome, seems like you can't go wrong with:
Android - Bluetooth - Torque or
iOS - Wi-FI (although I see some BLE4.0 options that work) - DashCommand

I bought an OBD2 - BT adapter from Newegg online for $17 a few years back, $5 for the Torque app on Android, and it has paid for itself many many times over and I have used it on multiple cars.

If you have one of those overpriced phones from that fruit company you need an OBD2 - wifi adapter, the phone wifi direct connects to the adapter.

The Vgate scan tool I referred to in my earlier post creates it's own short-range wi-fi network that you log into with your phone to get data.

No additional wi-fi is needed, so as long as you're within 10-meters of the Vgate device (plugged into your OBDII socket), you'll get uninterrupted data from your engine.

The adapter broadcasts a low power wifi network, which your phone connects to. Once connected to that adapter network, you open the app and you can see the vehicle information.

I have heard that DashCommand hasn't been updated in some time, and the OBD-II supported features for MINI on the website was last updated 2009. Will I get full functionality on an F56?

Sorry for the thread hijack!

Dash command seems to work good for viewing on-the-fly data, and some data logging. Not sure it collects ALL PID data during logging, but I've only used it a few times and it had what I wanted.

For any diagnostics, I use the Carly app.

Yes, although I haven't done my research to know where the measurement is being taken in the intake track.

I was not able to get Oil Temp to work properly, not sure if the car is even set up to read that. I'm still working on it.

I could not find an answer to this question on Google.
Will the wifi generated by the device be sufficient to operate a ipad mini in the car for other purposes?
Thx

What other purposes? The WIFI ODB dongle only allows connection to the car diagnostic port.

If by "other purposes" you mean receiving access to the internet, then no, it's only for communication between the OBDll dongle and the software.

If you're invested in the iOS ecosystem, get a LELink ODB-II adapter (http://www.outdoor-apps.com).
I currently use both OBD Fusion (for gauges and data logging) and EngineLink (to diagnose issues).
This OBD-II adapter uses Bluetooth LE. With this system, you don't need to manually pair it to your iPhone. Just open the OBD-II app and it'll connect automatically. Also, Bluetooth LE allows for you to stay paired to your car's radio while being connected to the device (you can stream music/make calls while using the OBD-II adapter).

Wow very nice.
What I have in mind is to use my iPad mini in the car, I have unlimited data so I can use many features and also the obd2 and my dash command.
For multi use your suggestion is perfect.
Thank you
Ben
