The February issue of Automobile magazine, they have their 2004 picks for what they think are the top cars in 14 different classes. In their opinion the 2004 winner of best “Small Car” is the MINI Cooper S JCW.

IMO The S is a great "small car" but also belongs in the sports car catagory. Toyota MR2 in that catagory? 
It is at best a "sporty coupe." With horrible handling (considering it's size & weight) and not enough power, the MR2 does not belong in the sports car catagory.
