Tricking the Clutch Sensor?

Hi all,

Searched the forums, didn't find anything relevant to my situation. Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to trick the clutch sensor into thinking the clutch is depressed? I created my own clutch stop which eliminates all of the extra travel in the clutch; however, now my Mini doesn't want to start. I've played around with different lengths for the clutch stop and unless the clutch is depressed almost all the way to the floor, it won't start. Stupid clutch sensor! I have a 2012 MCS (R58). Thanks in advance!

Curt

Try holding a magnet to it. If that works, tape and/or zip tie it into place.

Just jump the switch with a wire.

Would like to try the switch

Cristo, I tried a regular magnet. No luck. I may see if I can find a stronger magnet tomorrow and give that a shot.

Dan, your idea is exactly what I was thinking. Tried to find more information but only found a thread on a VW forum from 2007. I’m not an electrician (aka electricity savvy). I’ve wired LED flush mount turn signals on my R6 and spliced wires together, which is about as far as my experience goes. I understand the concept of a switch but I’m not sure where the wire needs to make contact. Could you explain in layman’s terms how to accomplish the switch? Thanks!

I'll dig around. It's not complicated.

Not 100% sure...
But if I recall, the switches on MINI's are "halls effect" , meaning no contact...
Think moving a magnet might be the best option...don't think you can always trick it...
I am interested to see if with such limited movement if the clutch can selfadjust...

Switch has 4 wires... not sure what they do in terms of running the show.

Generally hall effect units have 3..

AWOL, can you share a picture of the clutch sensor with the clutch pedal in the position that allows startup and a picture of the pedal relationship to the sensor with your stop in place ?

Same boat but have ignored the issue.
Is there a way to attach something to the pedal "shaft" that something would bet closer to the hall sensor? I have not looked under there as my back hurts enough.

Magnet was a No-Go

For those that may interested in trying a magnet...it didn't work on my 2012 R58S. The attached image indicates where I placed the magnet. I used a fairly strong magnet.

Has anyone tried a switch and did it work? How do I go about making the switch to disable the clutch sensor?

Someone needs to get a hold of one of the sensors from a salvage yard and get a handle on the design. Seems like one could remove spring depress it and plug it in and put off to side out of the way. In the pic is that the sensor or the rod to clutch master cylinder. Are they all integrated into one unit? I see the return spring.
Sensible?

be aware if you manage to disable the switch you might break your cruise control if it thinks the clutch is depressed all the time

How about adding vendor of clutch stop? My last manual BMW had a physical switch that was easy to trick with a piece of rubber and some epoxy, seems like it is harder now!
