Help!! turning off CDN DRL

Dear all,

As stated, I have checked the "NCSExpert for beginners" and "NCSExpert DIY" threads by GTECKO and i am very sorry that i am repeating a similar Canadian mini DRL problem which was discussed before. It is because i am really afraid of coding and would like to know the easiest safest way to turn off the CDN DRL on my MCS. I live in Vancouver and i have a 2007 MCS. I have been wanting to turn off the CDN DRL as i think it is really unescessary to have headlights on all the time.

So i have just made a purchase of the cable BMW INPA K+CAN from ecutool.com and waiting to recieve it now. Also, i have downloaded the "MIni Cooper Coding" file provided by GTECKO. Thanks very much to him!!

I have also studied a bit on the guides from the "Mini Cooper Coding" file. However, i am quite confused with Guide.II. That is, do i have to use NCS dummy? NCS dummy seems complicated to me and i am confused with the steps from guide II.

All i want is to turn off the CDN DRL and gain control on headlights. Is there any simple easy and straight forward way? i have never tried coding before, it is going to be my first time

Any help will be very much appreciated!! thanks in advance!!

There is a thread about this...Very easy!

You need to take the Canada regional setting out of the Vehicle Order string.

The code is $838 (I put the regional settings in the shared spreadsheet).

Remove that from both the CAS and FRM VO strings and then "default" the Kombi and FRM modules (or entire car). At that point you will be able to control the DRL from the BC menus.

I would be interested in if anyone figured out how to set the DRL to the City lights only (top half of fog lights) and then have the Headlights come on automatically if the light switch is set to Auto. I think this is what Gtecko was trying to accomplish.

Hahaha, Strobeyprobey I remember like it was yesterday when you helped me do this I think it might even have been my thread too

@Roca68:
when I got rid of $838 in my VO strings, I was able to use the light stalk, however, when on AUTO, no lights where on at all unless the sensor felt like it was too dark.
If I moved it to DRL, then the city lights where on - downside of it, it is on all the time, you turn of the car, it beep letting you know the lights are on.
Still looking for the solution.

Thanks for the response GTECKO. Let me know if you figure it out. Why must it be so difficult? Anyway, still waiting on my cable before I can start working on this.

Hi GTECKO,

I have my cable and have successfully removed the $838 string from my VO. I have DRL on which has the City Lights and the Side marker lights on when the light stalk is in the off position. When in the Parking light position the rear lights also come on with the city and side marker lights. With the stalk at Auto then all lights are on (was overcast today so I am not sure if the Auto is working or not). With it on Auto, and I turn the car off, All lights turn off and no beep.

I did adjust the FRM per volksfragen's post about Xenons and DRLs. Here is his post:

In doing this, I also found that you can activate the Licence Plate Lights, or Brake Lights to turn on with the DRL function as well.

This should work with all R56's with Xenon, regardless of the Rain Sensing/Auto Headlight Option.

The reason I looked into doing this, is the Law in Canada (Alberta specifically) states that all vehicles after something like 1997 need to have Daytime Running Lights. I did not want the Xenon Ballasts/Lamps striking everytime I ran the vehicle, but still needed to have lights on the front of my car.

All of this work will be done using NCS Expert and all coding will be done in the FRM Module.

In the instructions, Red text is the option to be edited, Blue text is the default/old value, and Green text is the new value to be changed to.

1- Open NCS Expert, Put vehicle into Ignition, and Read the FRM Module

2- Open the FSW_PSW.TRC file using Notepad

3- There are 6 Options we need to change to do this. I will describe the option, and what the old variable is, and what to change the new variable to.

4- Search for "VERHALTEN_DRL_TFL". This option selects what the behavior is for the DRL operation.

- Change the value for "VERHALTEN_DRL_TFL" from "drl_l" to "drl_s". drl_l is the option for DRL_LOWBEAMS, and drl_s is the option for DRL_SELECTIVE

5- Search for "DRL_TFL_SML". This option is to toggle the Upper Fog Lights for DRL function.

- Change the value for "DRL_TFL_SML" from "nicht_active" to "active"

6- Search for "DRL_TFL_KZL". This option is to toggle the Licence Plate Lights for DRL function. I do not want them on with DRL's, so this step is to disable them.

- Change the value for "DRL_TFL_KZL" from "active" to "nicht_active"

7- Search for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL_2". This option is to toggle the Side Marker Lights at Running Light Level, for DRL function. I do not want them on with DRL's, so this step is to disable them.

- Change the value for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL_2" from "active" to "nicht_active"

8- Search for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL_1". This option is to toggle the Lower Brake Lights at Running Light Level, for DRL function. I do not want them on with DRL's, so this step is to disable them.

- Change the value for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL_1" from "active" to "nicht_active"

9- Search for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL". This option is to toggle the Brake Lights at Running Light Level, for DRL function. I do not want them on with DRL's, so this step is to disable them.

- Change the value for "DRL_TFL_RL_BL" from "active" to "nicht_active"

10- Save file as FSW_PSW.MAN in the NCS Work Folder.

11- Write the FSW_PSW.MAN file to the FRM Module.

12- Turn vehicle off and back on into Ignition, and your Upper Fog Lights should now be your DRL's!

Post any questions you have.
Not sure if that is why my lights turn off or not. Still need to verify some stuff I guess but I thought you might be interested.

Are there any settings for the sensor? I am wondering if I need to activate it or not.

Perhaps cross posting on www.SOMC.on.ca may help you find someone as well.
