Well, it is the coolant fill tank. As for the reasoning to why it's there....let's ask Alta. I just did as the instructions showed, and figured they knew what they were talking about when they made the instructions. But it is a great question. ALTA where are you?? But seriously would the engine compartment temp hit 200 on a day that was about 35? I don't know.

That's why I keep asking that question. The overflow tank never has coolant flowing through it, like a passage in the motor would. It's just used to "catch" fluid that is expanding due to heat. I've never seen any vehicle that used a temp sensor in the coolant tank, but this Alta one does just that.

Do you have pics of where you stated that you unplugged the map sensor and plug in the ALta and the map on top of the alta? Or was it that red alta block the plug your talking about?

Let me just state that I by no means am an expert in this stuff. I am just willing to share how the install went for me, and "try" to help with anything that I can. As for the water temp, I have a PM to Adam at Alta to come in here and answer the question.

I didn't mean any offense to you. I think the gauges look great. I'm just curious why Alta chose to use that for water temp. I look forward to their response.

I wasn't offended. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that I wasn't some pro engine builder or anything. No worries!

A couple of pod and gauge questions.....

Who else besides Alta sells pods that will fit an R56?

If the 2nd gauge was going to oil-related, which would be more preferable and WHY: oil pressure or oil temperature?

Thanks, in advance, for any input you can provide.

im no expert but if you have a water temp gauge already, i would go for oil pressure. That said, i would prefer to have both if possible.

it appears the craven speed would allow for up to 4 gauges... does anyone have it? it would be awesome to get boost, water temp, oil temp and oil pressure.

1. Has anyone mounted the solution Cravenspeed gives (FlexPod) for more guages?
2. Having a look at their site amazingly i saw gauges placed on Cravenspeeds R56 FlexPod that look like OEM! Have a look and tell me what you think!

if those gauges aren't OEM, what are they, not sure but they seem to look ok?

The question is, what is the lighting at night? There are plenty of gauges that look similar to the stock gauges. But what do they look like lit up. But they do look good.

How many wire are on the boost gauge, and can you tell me where you tapped the lines to what color on the tach? It'll make it alot easier when I install it,instead of searching for one.

No answer on the water temp yet. I would imagine that he will get over here tomorrow. As for the boost gauge. You have one plug that comes from the engine bay to the back of the gauge, and another plug that you tap into 4 wires in the car. Those 4 are constant, 12v switched, illumination, & ground. Very easy. For the different colors, there is a diagram that comes with the gauges to tell you how to make it different colors. It's just a matter of switching the 12v switched, and illumination. It's easy.

Thanks for the question. The Fluid is actually cycled through the tank the same as the rest of the engine block once the thermostat opens up. It isn't like some cars that have a "burp" only type tank!

Good question!

Did I get it above? I was out at the Grand Opening ALL day yesterday as well as on Thursday through Friday on prep work. Sorry for the delay.

Just to confirm again, the tank where ALTA mounts the water temp DOES have water flow through it.

ALSO, you can mount up to THREE gauges with our kits on the OEM tach. One at the top, and two on the sides.

Hope that helps! Thanks again!

Those appear to be AutoMeter gauges. They are VERY expensive in the electrically divorced versions (like ours are) and the lighting isn't the same at night. Agreed the white faces are kind of nice during the day. Thankfully, those gauges (as well as a TON of others) work with the ALTA pod. You can purchase the pod WITHOUT gauges if you choose.

Thanks for the ?

cool, thanks for the info on the water gauge. Now as far as oil gauges.... do you guys have any plans to make some sort of adapter for those? Also, do you have any plans for a 4 gauge setup?

curious but are there other options on where to mount the gauges?

I was thinking something similar to the Subaru Sti's where they have theirs mounted on the dash. For the Mini, i'm looking for something right up the dash where it meets the windscreen. I think that would look real nice.

Adam, thanks for the update on that.

Do you make the pod without the flat spot on the side (I assume it's for your logo to fit flat)?
