Tail-Gater Mod?

Nearly got rammed from behind again today by some moron on his cell phone in a generic American sedan. I am fed up with it. So I got to thinking.......

Is there anyway to wire up a full-voiced truck horn in the rear of the car, facing backwards? Would it be legal? It would not be on the horn from the steering wheel, but on a separate switch, reserved for these special occasions. I even have a spare spot on my toggle bank. Would such a thing fit under the car without diminishing the already low clearance?

I have a 2006 MCSa with 17 inch rims and runflats (though the tires will change as soon as the tread is gone). I also have the reverse gear sonar, so I don't know if that would limit placement of the horn(s)

Any ideas or opinions?

BTW, I usually just pull over and let the idiots pass, but sometimes there is no place to do so, or it is obvious that to do so would be dangerous since they aren't even looking forward. So I would like something to get their attention, short of hitting the brakes or using some obviously illegal strobe.

Horn's a pretty easy thing. I think the only problem would be finding the space to mount it, which, of course, depends on the size/shape of the horn. Have you considered those LED message license plate frames? Of course, that would require the idiot to be paying attention.

This friend of mine's dad had a bright driving light installed as a "work light" on the rear bumper of his Cherokee. Said it worked well. I sometimes use my windshield washer if there's somebody on my bumper. It usually works for me without incurring a road rage incident. Gotta be careful these days.

Tail-Gater Mod

But see, the beauty of my horn idea is that the trailing idiot cannot see where it is coming from. The rear washer is fun if you are SURE you won't be shot in return. The rear light is probably illegal to use while moving. But most drivers, even idiots, will slow down or even slam on their brakes if they hear a loud horn. And if that horn was truly aimed at them, yet the source was invisible, even better. The question remains: is such a thing possible and is there room under the car to mount it?

There's some pics and stuff about mounting a trailer hitch behind the fog/backup light.

I wonder-some of the normal nautilus shaped horns are LOUD-I remember pepboys had a whole assortment. Suppose someone were to leave the light out (pops out very quickly), and makes a little bracket holding the horn, with the outlet of the horn right behind the opening.

There's also some under-car photos in the one-ball thread

Hey-that's an idea. If you have an S, the one-ball mod removes the resonator-leaves a big space. You could probably mount air-horns where they go!

How about twin .50 calibers? Or an oil spray? Or nails dropped? I know Q installed those on my car...

On the old MCS you could "Redirect" the rear wiper sprayer to a more favorable position. You could accidently fill up the tank with say... brake fluid, and sneeze a few times coincidently when someone is tailgating you. The legality of such a device would be questionable, although probably more so than a rear facing spotlight or train horn... lol

I like the one ball mod, using that large space for a long air horn. The advantage would be when you hit the horn it'd make your car faster... but it'd take all the power from our little engines to power the compressor!

How about a SportLink with Estes rocket motors inside? Easily wired for an electronic remote trigger...

(note: this is all in fun, I don't recommend anything that would irritate other drivers or lead to a road rage incident!)

It seems the drivers in St. Louis are ATTACHED to my back bumper... I guess doing the speed limit is a thing of the past. But I have been scheming and trying to find a way to mount a paint ball gun that can be remotely operated for just such the occassion....... My wife says I need help... not with the paint ball gun though....

I have found it quite enjoyable to run people (like the moron you described) off the exit ramp when they try to pass me on the right using the exit ramp as a passing lane......

Take the advice of the Penguins: "Smile and wave, Boys, just smile and wave"

Sometimes that just gets their goat right there!

Consider: We're too conspicuous in our Minis to "blend" after a passive-aggressive move or an ill-timed "salute"...

Get a one-ball and rig up a device to mount where the resonator once was. This device will hold a large rock, and when they are tailgaiting have it wired to a switch that drops the rock and when it hits the groung it will bounce up into their bumper haha. No no dont fo that... It will cause many accidents.

The propper thing to do is to just slow down as they creep up. Keep hitting the break and let everyone pass you but dont let them by. Do this for about 2 minutes and then resume normal driving. Repeat as necessary. If they dont get the idea to back off they will probably opt for running you off the road.

Rear wiper delete, install paintball marker with barrel pointing out of wiper hole in glass, zip-tie marker to boot lid, run the CO2 tube (or nitrous) down to the now open resonator space where you have your tank strapped up, wire the electric trigger to the wiper operation motor wiring and there you go.....he gets to close, just activate your rear wiper and BAM!

....just make sure you got some open road to get the hell out of there.

I sometimes throw 7-11 chili dogs out the window if they arent paying attention, it looks like they hit some kind of animal when it explodes on their windshield....although i did get punched in the face once because of this.....hmmmmm

I don't have a wife (pheew!) to tell me I need help, so my thoughts are normal, i think.

Used to be all you had to do was re-aim the nozzle and thar ya go. Then in 2004 Mini got chicken and prevented the rest of us from doing so. Bummer.

Yeah, seriously! On the 2002-2004 minis all you needed was a thin piece of wire or a pin, re-aim the nozzle backward, and Bob's Yer Uncle, the guy behind you gets wet. Oh - and the rear wiper does a couple dry passes on the rear window, to disguise the fact that you did it on purpose.

That part was changed sometime in 2004 so the '05 and '06 Minis can't do this, and the change continued onto the R56 and beyond - so no spraying back easily.

I have a couple of old VW washer tanks and pumps in the garage (easy finds at salvagte yards), and have been toying with either putting headlight washers on my wife's Soul, of making a 'gater mod on the MCS... maybe both!

Great mod....and it will not incite an aggressive driver to try to kill you...you can never tell in this day and age!!

http://www.waymotorworks.com/3rd-bra...ulsar-kit.html

These units will flash your third center brake light about after you apply your brakes and then brake light will remain on without flashing as long as your brake lights are on.

Using surface mount technology, this little unit was designed to be as small as we could get it for our MINI's and it fits nicely into the third brake light cavity.

The pulsar module allows you to select Long or Short pulse duration during installation by moving the jumper by the S and L. The Short setting pulses the light about 6 times while the Long pulses it about 10 times.

After getting many requests from owners who live in high stop and go traffic areas like Los Angeles, we developed the second generation PULSAR with SmartPulse technology. When in stop and go traffic, SmartPulse will stop the third brake light from pulsating. When you hold your brake pedal down for more than 12 seconds and then reapply your brake within 9 seconds, this unit will not pulse the third brake light. It will come on solid. When you reapply your brakes after 12 seconds, the unit will pulse your third brake light again.

If you do not wish to have the SmartPulse enabled, simply remove the jumper at J4 and the unit will behave like a gen1 PULSAR.

Installation is very simple. Unscrew your third light, connect to the wiring and reinstall the light.
It is great for those tailgating SUV's!!
