Drilling out stock mufflers?

I was thinking about an old motorcycle trick, where one drills a number of holes in the mufflers(pipes) of motorcycles for better breathing and sound.

Has anyone thought of doing this to their stock muffler setup on a cooper S?

...Drilling holes in the muffler? I don't believe that anyone in their right mind would even think about doing that. You'd fail inspection (if they have them where you are), exhaust gas would not exit out the back of the car like it should, and it would probably sound like crap.

I've ridden motorcycles since 1975 and have never even heard of that trick.

This is a joke, right?

No, it's real, but not very practical. I suspect it would sound terrible. Also, most guys that punch holes in the mufflers on bikes probably lose power due to altering the required back-pressue.

a number of years ago, i guy i worked with did this to his neon. It sounded surprisingly good, considering. I even rode in it once, and it wasnt too bad. Not the route i would take. You could always oneball it...(search for one ball if required)

You drill out the Baffles, not the exterior of the muffler. This allows more exhaust escape faster. I did it on a Suzuki Intruder and worked great!

ok.... so I don't have an S, but could that really work? That sounds like a nice cheap way to make it sound better. Does any one have any idea if it would effect horsepower/gas milage also? How would you go about doing this?

Make sure that you have something to catch/clean up the mess. Blood stains.

I also did something similar on a Honda MC a number of years ago, but the difference is that the motorcycles had (have?) removable baffles that are easy to drill & reduce back-pressure.

The MINI does not have removable baffles in the exhaust system. Let me also point out that if you drill-out the catalytic converter, it is highly likely the car will fail any required State smog inspection.

That will be one "butt ugly" muffler with all those holes emitting all kinds of black exhaust residue from every oriface. You might get an uncomfortable rumble(vibration) in your back seat (where "swiss cheese" muffler is located). You could buy one of those $10 carbon fiber muffler/exhaust pipes that are advertised on ebay and save all the trouble drilling.
