If you could see through the bonnet...

you'd see this. Well, if you could see through my bonnet, this is what you'd see. Of course you can always just lift the bonnet, but then you can't see where bonnet-things are, like the grille and the scoop. Notice the (lack of) space above the DFIC, the large amount above the shock tower brace that is taken up by the bonnet liner, and the distance between grille and airbox intake duct.

Here's another from above which is not as informative, mainly because I have a DS car. Would be cooler with a colored bonnet.

I was thinking about these photos because robino has posted that his Alta V2 IC has punched dents in his bonnet. Now you can see why, since it's bigger than the M7 DFIC shown here.
btw, none of this image-making will be possible with the R56...but then that's not my problem.

Phil, excellent job! Those are very cool pics.
Do you have any from the front w/DFIC?

None from front on, but can do! Actually I was using these to sketch up a new scoop...an integrated inlet, outlet scoop along the lines I saw on a Nissan R-34 JGTC. eg.

Not a great sketch but you may get the idea. I checked the profile see-through and an exit-diverter to the louvers would be relatively easy to fab.
And if we could afford the talent of Joel (JS) it would look fantastic (...ah, not like a festering pusstule like the Equiss) Ooops, did I say that? JMHO...

Excellent idea(pretty damn good sketch too), the only thing is the factory offset of the IC.
How do you propose to exit it in the center of the hood?

Damned that look good!!! The under the hood exit duct can deal with " off center path " the same way the scoop does , no problem! The louvres would have to taper to the center to meet the hood center bump, no probleme! And the hood frame has to go (at least the center), no probleme! I wish I had some clay!! Dr phil

Actually, Joel tells me you can get a pretty good sized exit scoop without cutting the hood braces! My problem would be mating this to my FAD duct, but I'll give it a try if anyone could ever make this scoop. I don't think it has to sit all that high off the bonnet either--it could be as little as 1/2" high since the louvers would actually sit below the bonnet line and mate up with the exit diverter (which could be offset/asymetric).
Anyway, just ideas--and it's cheap to photograph, photoshop and sketch!

btw, my FAD is clearly working--I have to clean my Alta air filter at least once a month nowdays.

Really neat shots there phil... thanks again as usual for your informative posts. Did you just tripod the camera and pchop? If so I'll have my gf do one angled like that of my cr/bl... that way we can see the hood a bit more clearly.

Yes, it's simple: using a tripod make 2 photos, then simply overlay them in PS and blend the (top) bonnet image by moving the opacity slider. I did a bit more erasing to get it to look better, but that's just PS tinkering.
I'd like to see another color just to confirm my hypothesis that the colored bonnet would show some details and locations better, especially on the profile image.

I wonder if the Mini was designed so that there would be a certain amount of air coming thru the intercooler and out the back of the engine compartment to the underside of the car to cool the exhaust and vacate the heat on the back side of the engine. Altering the hood scoop so that it reduced the flow out the back of the engine would naturally reduce the airflow off , down and out of the engine compartment. Just wondering is all. Is there a low pressure zone on back side of the engine, from a draw off the underside of the car? Wouldnt there be a dead zone right in front of our rather steep windshield?

Wow, that'd be a *hot* looking scoop. At AMVIV, I saw Randy T (M7 Tuning) had an add-on to his DFIC directing the air up-&-out through his hood vent. If your idea & Randy's add-on could be put together, that'd be a product I'd buy for sure.

Really nice work Doc, I think the sketch looks great and blends very well with the lines of the mini.

I love the concept.

Phil, look in my gallery for the bikes. Your Giant is awesome. How much does it weight. Did you know Jan used to race.

I think M7 will be offering an exit scoop, that reflects the design of the Ram Intake scoop shown in my photos. They will, however, be separate items requiring 2 holes (the OEM intake hole and an aftermarket exit hole.)
My idea was to make a single scoop, still requiring 2 holes, but covering the center section of the bonnet as sketched. I ultimately would like to do this with a CF bonnet as it could be "molded in" to the bonnet to form an integrated bulge sort of thingy.
Somehow, I think that ideas a long way off... (see my wife.) haha.

this is a god idea for a scoop. i wish there was a way to do this with out messing with the bracing of the hood. im watching this one.
and if anybody whats to supply me pics of the r56 to do that to ill do it noproblem. it will take 5 min.

awesome job man!

I don't think this idea would affect the underhood bracing, but then I'm not looking at a hood now. When I modelled the Exit Scoop, I made sure that I didn't interfer with the bracing.
Dr. Phil, are you proposing raising the DFIC to be more inline with the airflow?
