I know the Phantom Grip unit needs maintenance.

You'll need to get the transmission off the car in order to install it.

I would suggest put a little more $$$ and get a quality one such as a Quaife.

$700 is a lot of money, but installation of a LSD is expensive too...

Even if you get a $400 Phantom Grip LSD, the whole job will be above $1000.

I'm a mechanic, so install is not really an issue. I am mostly concerned with differences in driveability, and sound, as well as reliability.

Oh I see...

Then maintenance should not be a problem. The Phantom Grip will get the job done. Try to find the episode where Tuner Transformer where modding a MINI Cooper S. There was a part about that LSD install. It will give you a good idea.

The Phantom is much louder than the quaife if that sways you any.

Also Nuzzo had a quaife in his car.

Been running the Phantom grip for juat about 3 years now in my O3. Had it installed within the same Month that Pauls car was shown on Tuner Transformation. I've had no issues with the unit. Only maintainace im aware of is a need to change the Oil twice as often to help minimize the Shavings.

As for T Nuzzo running them in his cars this is correct he did and he was one of the Very FEW people that would give me straight answers to my question about the product. Which is the reason i went with the Phantom grip. Tony would also change the Unit Often if i remember which is not a quote he did so every 10 races or so to keep it at maximum grip.

Performace wise the the Street version which is what i run. After 40k miles on the Phantom grip and 2 full seasons of Autox. Im still able to pull Posi's from the starting line and coming out of a corner when i get back on to it to hard to early. The PG has a feature to where if it has a certain amount of load on it. It will lock up and become Posi traction. This happens in both Hard acceleration and Deceleration. Durning Deceleration if i give it a little gas so that its not the engine that slowing the car but just the brakes. This unlocked the PG and allows the car to turn alot easier.

The difference between the version Race and street is the heavyness of the springs. The street version allows for more Slippage before locking up than the Race version.

Hope this helps some

so let me see if I understand. You say that it fully locks under a certian amount of load, when it does this you would really have to fight to get around a turn right ? It sounds like it might be a little more race oriented than what I am looking for. I want to effect driveability as little as possible from what a stock LSD is like.

I have a 2003 MCS and had some tranny issues. I got a 2005 tranny with LSD. The stock LSD is a blast. It engages smoothly and gets the job done.

It is a clutch-type and does not require any maintenance. I emailed GNK, the LSD manufacturer, and they told me an occasional auto-x car's LSD (MINI stock one) will last for arounf 120 000 miles.

Just to let you know...

I didn't know that he originally had a Phantom. But when I saw him last week he was telling me that he had a quaife. So he must have switched over. He even sold his extra quaife a month ago. Sorry for any confusion.

I have one!

But it's in a drawer waiting to get installed. No reason to pull the tranny yet. I bought it for less than $200 a while ago...

And Posi-Traction is a trade name for a limited slip. What you are refering to is known as a locking differential, and if you're a muscle car guy, you'll recognize one of it's trade names as "Detroit Locker". Locking differentials have some advantages and disadvantages. I'm most familiar with thier use in high hp rear drive cars, when you have tons of torque to put down.

Yes I am .. Since im running all Lightwieght equipment. Flywheel, clutch, Crankpulley, etc. The difference between On throttle and Off Throttle is more severe than with stock configuration. When doing Autox where you are staying in lower gears is when I've noticed it locking up on deceleration, But for normal Street driving there isn't an issue with it. Also if it helps i am putting down 225 whp with 205 lbs of torq.

Sorry for the OT, but if you don't mind my asking, what kind of mods do you have that you are able to pull 205 lb/ft of torque?

I had a phantom grip in a 95 Mitsu Eclipse Turbo FWD, and I would not reccomend any one to use one. I never dynoed the car, but it trapped 104 in the 1/4.

The Phantom grip works by using centrifugal pressure on your standard spider gears, in turn putting wear on the side of their bearings. when my differential exploded for the 3rd time, i saw the excessive wear that the phantom grip did to the diff.

I would reccomend anything else. I know that this is not a Mitsu, and it doesnt make nearly the same torque as the turbo. but worse case senerio is a second trans rebuild.

Since this run

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ighlight=graph

And to prove a point. I went back and did another run in Full Dyno trim. Which is a set of Stock Holies that are bald. Which weighed 22 lbs per rim and tire VS the 54 lb ones during that run. Also over inflated them and ran 112 octane Race gas along with spraying the IC during run. This gave me the extra numbers
