I've had Jerome for little over a month now, and I love him.
One of the fun parts is slowing down to a light and hearing that little rumble from the exhaust. Is there anything I can do to increase that? The little rumble, blarble, grunt, or even a pop. I love it. I just want to hear it a little more, but nothing obnoxious.
Any suggestions?

I was thinking about doing that for the time being. I've been looking through those threads for the last day or so. What 15% did you get?

Since you live in Cali, you'd probably be best off getting a K&N Cold Air Intake (CAI) since it's CARB certified. I hear ALTA is working on getting theirs CARB certified, but the red tape involved has slowed the process. The CAI will give you that nice supercharger whine. The pulley will increase it a bit, but that's not the real reason to get the pulley Originally Posted by Keysersozeh

. Never heard the one-ball before, but a nice cat-back will give you even more of that burble. I just heard mine from the outside for the first time today (besides idle)...very nice. I hear the Steve's Auto is the place to go in So-Cal. Good luck!I used to have a CAI on my Accord, which I had it on there for about 5 years without any issues. I used to worry about it all the time, but it's one of those.. Do you normally drive into 3 feet of water? Umm, No. Then you should be safe.
I'll check into it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Does JCW make a pulley? That I can go to the dealership and have them install it? I do have concerns about warranty issues. CAI, not worried.. Exhaust, not worried..
Pulley, a little worried.

Not sure about the JCW pulley as a solo option...I think it comes with the whole kit. THe JCW is a 14.3% reduction...not too much off of the 15% pulleys made by ALTA, Craven, Helix, Webb, Mini Madness, DMH. Some dealers even sell aftermarket parts and will install and warranty the part. The catch is only that dealer...not the one is Dallas or Clevland when you're travelling.Originally Posted by Keysersozeh

P.S...don't worry so much

The CAI and any intake system mod will give you more supercharger whine & noise when stepping on the gas.
To enhance the exhaust rumble…..the “one ball” mod is the way to go. This mod eliminates the right side exhaust muffler, which shaves 22 lbs. Off of the vehicle and produces plenty of rumble. All for around $80 -$90 at your local muffler shop.
I had the CAI (Alta System) and changed out to the hot air induction (see my post “intake my way”), but am very happy with the inexpensive one ball mod.

Try removing the rear shelf behind the seats or even fold down the rear seats... you'd be surprised at how much more sound comes forward.

don't get the alta cai. Lots of complaint about the whistle sound at low rpm. Speaking from pass experience. Any other cai is pleasant.Former Sponsor
I had the Alta intake installed on my car prior to going twincharged. I absolutely loved the sound. I think many will agree that the Alta CAI combined with a pulley and decent exhaust is one of the most pleasing sounds on this earth.
Click here to check out a video/soundclip of the aforementioned configuration.
Just my opinion though.

IMO best mod you can introduce to your MINI is better air flow: CAI, reduced pulley & exhaust.
I have an Alta 15% pulley, Alta CAI and Miltek exhaust - and I've enjoyed every mile with them on.
There used to be sound clips to give you an idea of what the different exhaust systems are like. I went with the Miltek since it doesn't show it's agressive side until you stomp on it.

I love my Alta CAI (and pulley, and rear bar....), the sound is AWESOME, and the little bit of whistle doesn't bother me a bit! I like their stuff!

Mini Madness cold air intake and a Borla race exhaust! the burble is great! Some call it obnoxious, but I call it love! when getting off the gas it has gret sounding pops and really opens up the flow of air!Originally Posted by Keysersozeh

Actually, I find the Alta to be a bit too agressive... too whistle-y and loud. I wonder what the new box-top addition does to the sound...Originally Posted by SayGoodbye

Keep in mind that the Alta exhaust also is among the top performers as far as actual power gains are concerned.
Any shop in the LA area that I can go to get De-balled that someone can suggest?

Do you have a link to that data? I would be interested is seeing stats on the different exhaust systems.

I'm running a mini-mania CAI, 15% pully and an alta cat back. THe sound is great, love the pops and sound at wot, you can really hear the difference. If that's not enough noise for you i recommend getting rid of the back seats, in fact that's probably the most cost effective way to increase sound from the drivers seat, not to mention the loss of weight. Can't remember whether i got rid of the seats before installing the exhaust but i know my car sounds great now. I think my next mod is going to be new headers, in addition to power i've heard it'll add a little grunt in the noise/music department.

15% pully, K & N, Borla Race, Mini Mania modified header with bolt in "test pipe", rtear seat delete
When I track with the test pipe ... now that is burble and pop !
are you Nor or So Cal ?

A mod that will really change the sound from your engine and turn up the volume of the supercharger is removing the back wall of you intake (closest to driver). You will not only get a HUGE change in the amount of cool air your engine sucks in but the car will sound like a jet at wot, the car just screams, you can't imagine how big the difference is. Alta has you do this when you install their intake but i did this mod with my minimania cai and am extremely happy with it. It doesn't make the exhaust pop more but it does give you more audible pleasure and you'll know the car is supeercharged
