Drivetrain Bad experience with Alta Twubo kit

That thread is full of them. Even the most minute problems you made a big deal about. I have said all I wanted to say, now I'll go back to standing in the corner.

I am glad that people are willing to stand up and let people know of a shoddy product. Now I hope that this will put some pressure on Alta to resolve this matter and everything works out well for you.
bad experience
Let me just say the newest manifold (version 3) of which I have in stock now is an almost complete redesign over their previous manifolds. I have had my share of hiccups along the way but Jeff and Alta have always helped me out and never just left me or my customers hanging.
Alta is a huge reason there is an abundance of aftermarket MINI parts available now. I just dont think its fair to discount all they have done as a business for this one instance.

Good luck with the conversion.
I have been waiting all morning for Alta to get on and tell their side of the story... From what I have seen on NAM, Alta seriously tries to please every customer and sell a reliable honest product.
Eastsidemini, I hope you get your money back with no further questions from Alta.
And Paul Webster, is that beastly turbo manifold you posted pics of for an Evolution VIII? Does anyone have any close up pics of a TC Mini's turbo manifold?

Made up my mind
I have been debating for a while to do the twin charge or to do a head and cam swap. I think this post just helped me make up my mind.
Isellem has been telling me for a while that the head and cam swap is more reliable power and now I can see why.
Thanks for the post!

Andrew (aka EastSideMINI),
As per our conversation last night I am sorry that you continue to have problems with your purchase. You have obviously followed through with your threat to attempt to publicly bash our products and our credibility. Just as I said in that conversation the NAM community is important to us, yet we don’t run from criticism, constructive or otherwise. (I mentioned our Q&A thread here, where we publicly address clients concerns before and after the sale. Your thread is seen in the same light and we will answer it in the same fashion.) If you felt shunned or off put in previous conversations, you should have vocalized those concerns there, if you felt that is a just and necessary course of action. But to make NAM a threat is simply unprofessional and ill spirited. That goes against the opinions of even others here in your thread that have spoken ill about us and our products. They would feel robbed that they didn’t have the opportunity to stand with you earlier if you felt it was necessary to get the opinion of the group. Why would you hold back then if you feel it necessary now? I would hope that the NAM community can understand that using it as a way to speak ill truths and slanderous comments is not in the spirit that Mark Ferguson wanted when he created the site. Regardless, we welcome the opportunity to express publicly our side of the situation, now that you have opened the door. We make every effort to help any and all clients that bring a concern to us directly. We pride ourselves on the prompt, accurate and helpful service we provide.
We feel we have tried everything within reason to help you with your situation. Admittedly, the initial problem with the defective turbo is frustrating at minimum and needs to be addressed immediately. As you recall I asked repeatedly last night for additional information on the date the turbo was received, tracking #’s etc. so I could inquire to Garret directly as to where the state of the return was. Jeff in our technical staff had offered to replace the turbo for free. But you chose to deal directly to get a replacement and pre-pay that replacement amount. (Albeit at our cost. Jeff was making another attempt to help you by giving you that discount.) Jeff went on to explain that the length of time can vary, but he would do everything in his power to expedite it. I agree this has taken more time than necessary, but last night was the first I had heard about that portion of your concerns. You and I have only spoken about the manifold. The reflection above came after having spoken to Jeff. He continues to inquire where that return is and hopes to have an answer to you after the holiday break. I see no reason why that amount won’t be credited from Garret to you at that time. If not ALTA will see to making a refund from our coffers instead.
In respect to the manifold, Jeff has repeatedly asked for information about the installation, the AFR readings, photos of key areas and other information. You have flat refused to supply any of this information and the resounding comment from you is “My car runs fine!” While your car may run fine in your seat of the pants opinion, Jeff has stressed repeatedly that wrapping the manifold, combined with ultra lean conditions can break a manifold within a few blocks of driving. Yet every time he inquires to get more information to try to help you, you simply refuse. How can ALTA be expected to help solve your concerns if you refuse to relay pertinent information? Also, I tried to an exhaustive end to have you wait one week for the newer manifold to arrive to you. You felt the car show was more important and insisted a current version be sent overnight. We gladly obliged. I told you that Jeff still needed more information to determine the root cause and you said “MY car run fine!”
Also, you say you have not gotten prompt reply from me or from Jeff. You went so far as to try to tell a member of our sales staff that Jeff hadn’t spoken to you in over a week. Yet the same employee had just transferred your call to Jeff not four hours earlier and Jeff spoke to you for more than 20 minutes. You were blatantly lying to try to some how get Jeff in trouble with his manager. You also lied to me about similar complaints with Jeff, yet our call log supports his prompt return to any of your calls. You have exaggerated many aspects of this to this community and to others. Truth is a beautiful thing and a practice you should incorporate into your personal and professional life.
Referencing the kit and its overall integrity. This kit is an excellent upgrade to any MCS owner looking to improve the HP and TRQ on their competition only vehicle. Please note this kit is sold without required emissions equipment for street use. Installation should only be performed by a professional, with access to equipment capable of measuring at wheel HP and TRQ, air fuel ratio and EGT. In addition fuel must be added in proper amounts to keep the engine running properly. We offer multiple options to accompany our TWURBO™ system, to help achieve these goals. Out of more than 100 kits sold worldwide, we have less than a handful of clients that have experienced a problem. Each of those that have been brought to our attention have been addressed and resolved to the client’s satisfaction. We sincerely regret that Andrew isn’t one of them. If Andrew would like to work with us and provide the needed detail to resolve his concern we are of course happy to do that. (This isn’t a news flash or a new position after his rant above, we have continued to offer him the highest level of support and will continue to do so if he allows it.)
As always ALTA is an open book, and we welcome the opportunity to help any client (dealer or otherwise.) Please feel free to contact me or my staff directly with any questions, concerns, complaints or praise. Every persons business is appreciated from a filter cleaning kit to a TWURBO™ system. I trust members of this community that have had positive and repeated dealings with us will publish their experiences on this and other threads.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I would think if this was handled before it wouldn't have gotten to this point. My concern is your statement about lean conditions. If you truly tested the product you would know that the stock injectors are not adequate to handle the increased horsepower. Even JCW adds bigger injectors for 210bhp! I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle here.

Bill, (miniflop): The stock injectors are FINE with certain levels of tune. Since Andrew has not told us what boost level he is running, nor has he indicated fuel pressure, pump selection or anything else, we have NO idea what AFR he is running. We are happy to help, if he would allow us too. Thank you for your comment and allowing us to reply!

for a company providing a turbo kit (a very expensive mod) perhaps you should be a little more vocal about fuel systems or lack there of in your kit. An idea might be to state something about your beliefs on when the cars fuel system needs to be addressed.
isellem: Andrew claims to have dynoed the car. We asked him for the AFR. He replies with "My car run fine." That is all we can get from him. The kit is totally safe as is without additional fuel up to x HP range. This varies based on other mods and we say clearly in the instructions that this needs to be checked. We offer fuel pump upgrades, injectors and fuel controller for clients wishing to exceed 250 HP. Again, we want to help any client with this kit or any other product.
Also, my extension is 203, general sales at 213, Jeff in Tech at 202. We are open 8-5 M-F Pacific. Feel free to call me or my staff at any time. My apologies if a previous VM was unanswered.
Thanks again everyone!

I appreciate you replying. Having watched the ECU being tuned with software it's quite obvious that the stock injectors are lacking for high performance. Who would go to the trouble of installing this kit if he WASN'T looking for high performance? Isn't the kit sold with all of these items, like fuel pump etc?
Bill
miniflop: The factory injectors don't run out of head room that quickly in many situations. But, we won't deny that if you want to go beyond a certain amount you need more fuel. The addition of the pump, and injectors without ECU compensation (or other control like the APEXi AFC) will cause an over rich situation. Each client is different and we treat them as such. See the note below from our website:
"This is a specialized product and should be treated as such. We strongly encourage potential clients to contact us or their dealer via phone or e-mail prior to ordering to insure this is the proper kit for them. This kit is designed solely for competition use only and is not emissions compliant. We can tailor a complete system for your specific need. Thanks in advance for choosing ALTA Performance Products! bad experience
I have no idea why you mentioned the manifold was wraped. It was never wraped. You and Jeff have never asked for the part back but I'll be more than happy and would go out of my way to take photos of the BAD, DEFECTIVE and yet sold Alta manifold for every in the world to see for themselves. Please do not blame the AFR or my AEM UEGO equipment or I'm running too much boost. It is just a bad product from Alta and you still won't admit it to the public. 2 manifold across the Unite State which cracked in less than 2 weeks from 2 different car and setup. The total manifold added up to 5
I had mine for less than 6 months total (NOT A DAILY DRIVEN CAR) and the other car across the state which he had purchased the kit in March 06, 9 months with 3 cracked manifold.
Do not keep saying you have a respectable product because you don't. As per our conversation yesterday, we have gotten nowhere. I have not lie about the whole post so don't call name. That is not professional. I am truthfully posting what had happened because of you arrogant and not willing to admit a fault product.

Andrew: We fully admit that in any mass produced product there are unfortunately going to be 'x' amount that will have a problem. (Look at the vehicle you are driving for example. How many problems has this community had with warranty concerns over suspension, ECU's trunk latches etc.) The vast majority of the clients with this product have been very happy. A 4-7% failure rate is still unacceptable to us (hence the reason for a continual improvement in all of our products) we strive for 100%. I feel strongly that the bulk of our clients on this message board as well as others have been extremely happy with the parts they have purchased. There is always some percentage that will, for whatever set of circumstances, have a bad product or experience. We work with each client that has an issue and work to an amicable solution to every one. Understandably each can't always be worked out to the clients satisfaction.
What is notable is that I (nor Jeff) have blamed any other equipment on your car for the failure of the manifold, turbo etc. We have repeatedly asked for additional information about the vehicle the installation, etc. At no point throughout this entire process have you volunteered this information. Also, you freely admit that this is your first experience with this type of product. That is ok. But it certainly explains how you were able to confuse the oil and water lines during the first installation. Resulting in an impressive plume behind the vehicle as you drove. You may recall your panicked and urgent phone call about how you had blown up your car. Yet Jeff handled that call with the utmost professionalism and talked you through the situation, getting you back down the road. So you must admit we all make mistakes (including yourself.) The TWURBO™ system is not a mistake nor mis-made. But a percentage of manifolds have failed and we have addressed that with replacements and improved versions if a client needed.
Your unprofessional business tactics proceed you and we are thankful that you no longer represent the ALTA™ brand. (Since you have opened the public door to scrutiny , we would be happy to explain the countless complaint calls from your clients, the lack of a business telephone line, fax line etc. to this community if someone should ask.) We hope a suitable Hawaiian replacement can be secured soon to fill your place.
Again, thank you for expressing your concerns to this community. We welcome the opportunity to explain our side to this story.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

62lincoln: Thank you for your question. That deposit is with Garret the turbo mfr. If you note in my reply above that if Garret has not refunded Andrews money after the holiday break in January, that ALTA will gladly cut him a check. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks again for asking.

.....quite sad which path Alta has taken, though not surprising.
Hello all!
We never intended to make a rip off anyones part, we made this post to show just that. One could say that someone copied us, but that isn't likely to be the case. Sometimes things like this happen, and that is how we played it up.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=56802
We were the first to show this type of intercooler, and had been working on it since May of 2005 for that years SEMA. So please don't say we copied something when it just happened that two companies had the same great idea going.
Regarding the pulley comment and it being the same or copied from someone else (assuming the small holes around the outside) the holes are a byproduct of our belt groove feature. This wasn't intended to make our new part look like anyone elses or use this a feature they are keeping the pulley X amount of degrees cooler. In fact our pulley completely different than others, just for the reason you mention, everyone copied it.
Andrew, i am sorry you feel like i haven't been helpful. I have spent tons of time being patient with questions, and your warranty stuff, to just have this happen. Come on, its Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah weekend, lets all take a deep breathe and enjoy it.
