so would it be of benefit to mount the foam piece (on the undersurface of the bonnet) more toward the front so that (when bonnet is closed) it hits the front lip of the i/c, making it more "flush" with the side diverters?
by "sealing" off the front surface of the i/c, you don't allow any incoming air to pass over the top surface of the i/c, and eliminate any air from escaping thru the side gaps on the top of the i/c. end result = force feed all the incoming air thru the front of the i/c, rather than allowing air to escape on the sides as it passes over the top of the i/c?
is this correct thinking for maximum i/c efficiency?
i have read the dfic threads, and several others have asked for a thru-the-scoop pic of the upper foam piece meeting the i/c, but i haven't seen a pic of this yet.

ok here's my attempts at pics...trying to emphasize the gap at the lateral edges of the top surface of the i/c.

yes... as per the instructions included in the DFIC package, the front edge of the intercooler is where the foam should be mounted for the best seal. A good seal was the purpose of the foam since you cannot use and therefore must remove the plastic intercooler/ scoop liner.
So far, all of the cars that have them installed up here at the Monterey Historics have them installed correctly, but thank you for bringing this up and clearing up any confusion.

Tony and I did basically the same thing but the implementation was a bit different.
This is based on his pics so feel to comment anyone if this is off.
Tony painted the surface of his foam a nice smooth skin. I did do a sample using this method.
I worked the RTV into the cell structure. On the surface it appeared "normal" but didn't pass air. I also found it to bit more pliant than the skinned version.
I don't think either of us coated the back side.
The test method I used for permeability was simple. I put some baby powder on the foam on the back side and took a can of aero duster and held it close to the coated side. If no powder blew out the back I was good.
A big plus to either of these methods is that crap doesn't get stuck in the material.
EDIT: Now that I see Peter's reply I'll add that this is something non-DFIC folks may want to look into. The OEM unit is guilty of this as well.

Is there really that much "leakage" based upon foam type?
Air always wants to flow the path of least resistance and I would think the least resistant path would be through the IC if the obvious holes in the pathway are blocked by anything.
I have another question though, and that has to do with water/rain passing through the DFIC and now being able to hit the electronics/plugs/etc.
Valid concern? It hasn't rained here yet but Car Washes haven't seemed to bother the electronics. Maybe not that much water gets through?

Due to recent events I need to make it clear this is a joke.These easy mods made a ~5% improvement in thermal efficiency.
There are threads by myself and Tony about this.
My 2¢. I doubt seriously that water will be an issue. If you have crap spark plug boots/wires maybe and even then it'd take serious amounts of water to matter.
