Drivetrain Dyno Results are IN!
Dyno Results are IN!
Well I went and had my 2004 MCS dyno'ed yesterday afternoon at DynoComp in Scottsdale, AZ. The only mods to my car are a B&B Cat Back Exhaust and an Alta Intake. I produced 171whp! I was flippin' amped! He said I was the strongest MINI he had ever dyno'ed with those mods alone! Anyways, I'd like some feedback on my numbers, I also have my A/F Ratio sheet but have no clue what it is telling me. Please chime in if you can inform me. Enjoy.
Alright....my Dyno printout....

A close up of my 170-171whp

A/F Sheet....please help....is this good?

hi,good going! what temperature was it at and how high was the humidity? i don't quite understand the pic of the mini at the bottom of the page as this has a sprayer and 15% pulley which would put it at about what you are getting. amazed it didn't pull timing.
Yea, I had purchased the 15% pulley and was planning to install and never did. I do have the Alta Diverter sprayer though...if thats a mod. The guy at the Dyno place insisted it had a pulley so I drove over to MINI of North Scottsdale and had a tech look at it, he said it was a stock pulley so I just have a strong one. The intercooler was wet when I produced the 171hp.

Sorry....temps were at 100degrees and humidity was at 22 percent or so. He had 3 fans on the car though......so it was staying pretty cool.

This post just goes to show the people in the other two posts that 200+ WHEEL horsepower is very do-able...even with basic mods. If he ads just a pulley, he'll probably be very near 200whp. Header and software...100% positive he'll be significantly over 200whp. These people saying they are barely at 200whp with a ported head and cam combo...along with all the mods above, wow they gotta be dissapointed. $1000s for a new head/cam and not even over 200whp??
I'm still of the mindset that our engines have some wide arc of variance between stock HP production. There's no way that an intake + exhaust added more than 10 HP, even that's a stretch. This means that his car stock is producing 160 HP+, so why the wide variance? Why are some people dynoing at 130, and others at 160.
Dyno results are hardly scientific, as they can vary greatly depending on a number of factors. If this was all done on the same day, in the same conditions, on the same dyno, it's different, but there are too many different factors that can affect the HP output.
This does show that 200+ whp is certainly attainable without spending 6k on a turbo kit. I'm not sure however why so many people are having issues breaking 200 whp with modifications almost identical to the ones my old car had.
Anyway, congrats on your dyno results! Looks like you have a very strong engine from the factory!

Some would argue that all this proves is that every dyno is different, and that dyno results keep getting less and less trustworthy as a means for comparing power.
He could very well have a rare, stronger MINI, which I hope is the case for him, but one is forced to wonder if the dyno itself is throwing out "optimistic" numbers.
I don't know... I'm not a scientist, and I don't play one on TV. I used to always trust dyno figures as gospel. But in recent months on NAM, I've grown less and less trusting of dyno power claims, from both manufacturers, and NAM'ers. By no means am I calling anyone untruthful; but I am perhaps calling into question the validity and accuracy of the dyno as a measuring tool for a MINI's power.

Certainly a dyno's result is only as accurate as the operator. Some dyno operators like to use crazy correction factors to "Please" their clients. Like you said though, it's possible he got some crazy fast Mini! I hope mine is like that too! If his mods gave him 10 HP though, and he's dynoing with those numbers, that effectively means he's producing the Stock published "At the Crank" HP rating at his WHEELS, which means his Mini's engine is 10-18% stronger than most.

This all makes you wonder why some dyno's are a lot " friendlier " than others. Two variables are always in effect. One the operator and two the calibration of the dyno itself. It is always good to check with the owner and ask when the last tme there was a FACTORY calibration performed not just the warm up self test.
he said he hasn't seen one stronger... and insisted there must be a pulley. he's either a great actor or i'm thinking telling the truth. it's not unheard of for someone to have a freakishly strong factory engine . good on him .
