Crank pulley survey

Somebody brought up this idea in the supercharger pulley thread and since I had some time, I threw together a table. You guys can PM or post on this thread and I will update the table. I'll probably update the first post with quotes of the problems in the first post. If you guys have any feedback, I'm open to suggestions.

i thought no problem as i carry a belt&the tool with me for just incase.
jacked car up &removed finder liner& to my dismay saw all the pulleys were trash. the adiler pulley stop had failed &allowed it to foul it all up. had car towed 200 miles to dealer (ferman in tampa) &found out the super-charger
had locked-up causing the mess. of course no warrantty because of mods.

30,500 installed 2% Alta pulley. Non-Mini guy did it. There was immediate slight vibration/rattle and roughness at low revs, like at takeoff or lugging engine.

32.500 new belt tensioner installed. (on warranty). This reduced the vibration a little. but it was still there and a concern.
34,000 I personally Ireinstalled a 2005 stock crank pulley that Randy gave me.

I have a red line of 7200 and have not had a issue and I have many miles on this as it was our first unit built. Based on this recent development we are cautioning anyone with raised rev limits to be cautious when thinking about lightweight crank pulleys. The car in question has a custom software pkg which allows for a red line of 8250 RPM and the car has hit that many times in the months prior to the m62 install. Well to be specific the oil pump gear decided it had enough and let go thankfully at idle but some pieces bounced around in the oil pan, got into the crank and took out a piston which put a hurt on some of the internals. The motor is being rebuilt as we speak and we hope to have more info as soon as possible. Again sorry for the delay but we wanted to do a through post mortem and make absolutely sure it was not M62 related.

No issues. Some vibration after the 3%, but not a lot more than what was there since I installed the engine damper that ties the engine to the frame. I do not race, but I drive like I stoled it sometimes.

M7 pulley. 500 miles on mine so far, no issues....installed by Webb. Quicker throttle response, no vibrational issues so far. Coupled with Alta 15% reduction SC pulley.

Should I include what size supercharger pulley it's paired with? What about self-installation vs. professional installation?

Alta, 2% (with 15%) 4000 miles, ZD. (Zero Defects)

and MDSBrain... you're blaming the pulley?! Aren't you the fella with the whole engine out for a bad block? Vibrations indeed!

LOL

I have THE puley that was on Mdsbrains car on my 04 MCS.

I bought it off of him after he took it off.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO vibration problems in my car!

I think you also should add wther or not the cars are autos or stick, I believe Mds is the only one ive heard of with a crank pulley problem, and he is the only auto in the group listed.

Yes, excellent idea (size does matter since it's considered safest to run no more than 2% oversized crank pulley with a 15% undersized S/C pulley to avoid belt problems). I'm an amateur, but I'm about to install mine in a couple of weeks. I expect to screw it up somehow.

Mileage, supercharger pulley size?

Unless there's some factual basis for the correlation of crank pulley problems and automatic transmissions, I don't really want to add it since at this point it seems like just a spurious correlation. I don't want to give the impression to people that only automatics have crank pulley problems. On the other hand, if you have some evidence that crank pullies do not work on automatics, I'd gladly add it.

Alta 15% pulley and M7 2% crank pulley, approximately 1000 miles, some vibration around 2800 - 3300 RPM, and some pre-ignition pinging (probably due to the combination of the extra boost and poor CA petro).

I don't really consider those to be significant problems, though the pinging definitely needs to be rectified, I can live with a slight vibration as a trade-off for the excellent throttle response and overall performance from the lightened/oversized crank pulley.

No SC pulley on mine.

MDS's 0% crank.

about 1500 miles. no problmes whatsoever.

as far at the tranny goes, i think MDS made a point, about the auto tranny thinking the engine is revving faster than it should (or should i say faster than stock) and its confusing the computer.

i dont do FWD cars often, so im not sure if that can be calculated in , but its something to consider.

Right, the car's ecu couldn't keep up with the revving of the engine and it wouldn't know to shift in time. This caused my rev limiter to rise to over 7k. In auto or manual mode.

well it must mean somethen when i put the pulley MDS had on his car on my car and you get two different outcomes with the same pulley.

that leads me to believe that this might be a tranny issue also.

Come on Steve, keep it ON TOPIC. j/k

Seriously, we don't need no stinking DIY. Bentley, blowtorch to heat up the shaft and we can do it. Seriously.

I posted a separate thread about a week ago and got no love

I wouldn't have to ask for a DIY if you would have paid attention when Mr. Webb installed yours

Alta 15% pulley (56,000 miles) no problems - now 88,000 miles

m7 2% crank pulley (9,000 miles) no problems - now 32,000 miles

Have MTH ECU flash with 7200 RPM rev limit - I am rarely above 6500 - got flashed back to to stock after a MINI recall - 6750 RPM limit
