Oil Catch Cans - where to mount?

I originally posted this question to the Webb Motorsports forum, but figured that I would get more of a response over here on NAM. This is primarily a question for Randy Webb and other "experts" who have a lot of experience with OCC's, so I'm not just looking to hear from people who have an OCC and a personal opinion (no offense intended).

As the topic says, I want to know more about where to mount an OCC. I've read the previous threads on OCC's and I understand that there are a number of places where we CAN mount them, but what is the BEST place? My main concern is that some feel that it is ok to mount the OCC in the cowl area, like the M7 unit. Others say that this is not a good idea because the oil in the hose won't drain into the can. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, you've excluded me so I'll just wait to see what the "experts" say.

There's plenty around

while I DON"T QUALIFY to opine based on your posting requirements - I will anyway .

"Overall" it proabably doesn't matter much, I think -

1) a low point in the engine bay (as an example where Alta recommends placement) which would encourage any oil in the "in" tubing to "drain" into the OCC as well as any oil that got by the OCC to "drain back" into the OCC.

2) shortest tubing travel path is proabably better than long travel path.

At the end of the day its better to add the OCC (as oppposed to not adding one) anywhere it will fit.

See my gallery for the location of my OCC. I wouldn't be too concerned about whether or not the can was above or below the valve cover. Any oil going into the can would drain back to the valve cover, and there shouldn't be any oil in the tube going to the intake.

Um - it isn't the valve cover that counts, it's the PCV.

One would prefer not to have the hose fill with oil, although it's really not a biggie.

However, the hose will try to fill with oil if it is going uphill to the tank, as the hose is the first place the oil mist condenses.

Obviously, when blowby enters the hose, it will blow the oil through into the the tank, and probably condense oil mist while bubbling through any oil in the hose, so it might even make having a tank more effective, but there's not much point in having a mess if the hose comes off the tank some day.

I mounted mine in the passenger cowl area that most people have theirs installed. Also suggested by Alta as well.
