Hiya!

After a week with the Magnaflow I have to say I love it; especially after the computer figured it out...

Grit your teeth and floor it BABAY!

On the subject of sound - it is louder than some could tolerate but I love it. It has mellowed over the course of the week (Maybe I'm just going deaf? ) and my experience is that ~3000 RPM is where it's the worst. 60MPH in 5th gear or 70MPH in 6th gear is bothersome.

I packed the boot with everything from very heavy blankets to soundproofing and it didn't make much difference. So I believe that it's either coming through the bottom of the car or the rear side panel area. I've done an inspection and tighten and I don't see the exhaust touching anywhere on the body.

I had another question for those of you with the Magna, the inside of the tips is BLACK with that sooty exhaust stuff. Do you have that and did it go away? Or do you just have to more diligent in washing it?

You just have to be diligent with cleaning the tips. The stock one is like that too, it's just not as noticable.

I also want one, mainly just for the noise. The thing is I live in England and I know of just one company who supply it and it costs £500!! How much is it in America, I can roughly convert $ into £. I want to know if I am being ripped off.

Glad to hear you are happy with the system! It is definitely mean sounding.

The black soot is a result of how rich the MINI runs, and there's really nothing you can do other than cleaning more often. I've found that the best way to take care of it is to use stainless steel polish (available at fine home and garden stores everywhere - as well as the grocery store).

koolmini,

I've got one here that seems to be calling your name - koolmini, koolmini, koolmini...

I have CVT and almost no soot on the tip, ever!
I'm still waiting for some-one to tell if the Magnaflow affects a CVT ?

The best metal polish I've found is called WENOL. It comes in a tube like toothpaste but its kinda pricey. Not only is it easy to use, its fun to say

The second best metal polish I've found is called NeverDull. It comes in a can full of what I can only describe as a giant cottonball soaked in neverdull juice. You just rip a piece off and rub it on the metal, then wipe. Its fun to use, but not as fun to say.

wwwebb and Nuvolari, thanks for that, I think I might have to look for a different exhaust system afterall.

If you still want to hear it, maybe I can meet you halfway and you can check mine out.
Where are you? I'm right by the GWB.

How far up is that? All I need is an excuse to get my car on the road. More than happy to meet you somewhere if you really want to hear it.

I've been dry wiping mine when I do the wheels. No real black buildup inside yet after 150 miles or so but I did notice it took a few days for some stinky creamy yellow paste to burn away from the inside of the pipes... some after spooge from the welding I assume.
btw.. those trumpets be HOT! Be careful!

Ok, so how bad are they at say 80/90mph? Loud enough that you have to shout to the passenger? Does the addition of a sound dampening material in the boot help at all? First and foremost my MINI is a daily driver and I do a lot of highway driving on the weekends. For fun I like to zip along the back roads. I'm sure the magnaflow would be great for zipping along the back roads but is crusing up I-95 with my Fiancee at ~80mph going to be an issue?

Originally I was going to do the exhaust first then the intake (once I saved up my pennies), now I may have to look at a different exhaust. :???:

Also a little aside, does the ECU handle the new intake and exhaust well or do you need to get it reprogramed? I've only really modded motorcycles before and I know that just adding an exhaust messes with the fuel mixture. I don't want to have my MINI making popping sounds when I decelerate.

Sirron,

I have to take a look again, but I'm pretty sure there are no differences in the center tunnel form the CVT to the standard Cooper.

I have to tell you though, that for the Cooper, I carry and am the happiest with the Helix system.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Chris,

Highway driving for extended periods at 80-90 mph might be a concern. You by no means have to shout to carry on a conversation however. It's more of a constant background noise that gets a little annoying after an hour or so - short highway trips at "legal" speeds are no issue.

Popping sounds on throttle lift - another concern with any of the systems, mostly due to the reduced back pressure. There is a slight "burble" (wow - judicious use of the quotes this evening) on part throttle lift with any of the aftermarket systems out there.

It sounds to me like you may be happier with an intake as the first mod.

I'd be glad to discuss any questions you have.

Just wanted to say that I LOVE that popping.. burbling.. crackling... noise. Just last Saturday, we deleted the middle resonator (not to be confused with the cat) on the magnaflow exhaust for a straight pipe. Tone is still the same, just louder (but not by an obnoxious amount). The main difference though, was the amount and volume of the exhaust crackle increased noticeably. Last Sunday, my wife and I went canyon running at Angeles Crest with the S2000 group. She drove the MCS, and I followed in the S2000. Approaching every corner, as she left off on the gas, I'd hear that bad-*** crackle!

Randy, do you know if the crackling diminshes over time? Previous exhaust systems that I've had on other cars have had a hint of crackling in the beginning, but would go away after time.

Randy,

My "drawwwwwl" sound comes at 60MPH in 5th gear and 70MPH in 6th. When I get above that (not that I ever have, officer) it seems ok...

Hmmm.

Anyone else have the same range?

I have the Mini_Madness intake and the Magnaflow exhaust on the my Chile, this combo kicks a**. Love it, would do it again. Sound is sooooo sweet at all speeds. I love to hear that supercharger whine at 6k rpm with the roar from those twin bugles. A pure symphony of sounds. As the miles roll by this symbiosis of components seems to blend together, car seems to be getting faster all the time. What is my ECU doing after this change? Is the car getting faster? Is this a hallucination?

My wife has bone stock S. She still hasnt broken hers in. Drive woman drive She has all weather run flats on 16s v spoke design rims. Haven't told her this yet, but when the weather is nice will have to do a comparison. I have S Lite 17s with performance stock run flats. Which one would be faster with same driver?
I know that her wheels are lighter. Any thoughts?

Wife is about 100# lighter, would she likely win if we were to race and are equal drivers? Thoughts? At least she would be unable to hear my screams if she left me in the dust. Thanks Magnaflow. I will post the results once the magic 1.2K mark has been met. Drive woman Drive

I still have the absolutely beautiful burble sound, though the overall volume of the system has decreased a bit.

jayoung,

I think it must be different on each car, and I think that it has to do with the stock heat shielding and its alignment. I would love for someone that has the "drone" to do an experiment (I would, but for some reason my car and the other cars I've put the system on haven't had the problem) - take off the factory heat shielding and replace it with the smooth adhesive backed aluminum sheets - Graham, any word yet?

TwOMINIs,

Your car would still spank hers!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Randy
