I was there last Monday

Saw the "cross your fingers" last prototype sitting on the bench. By now I figure Brian has it on his car shaking brain cases all over Littleton.

It's supposed to be dual stage: Street and Track with corresponding decibel levels.

Here's the deal. We have a three inch pipe, and have done everything in the world to make it quiet through baffling and muffler design. It is currently about as loud as the Borla Sport in the valve closed (street) position. This was the last prototype.

I can make these as is right now, but I think those of you looking for "Milltek" quiet on the closed side would be disappointed. Those of you who want a more aggressive sound, even on the street - this system is ready for you.

What am I saying then? We have a system that makes true double digit gains in horsepower, that can be driven - and it isn't even obtrusive at highway speed - right now. I want a system that is QUIET when the valve is closed though, and that system is not done.

Sooooo, how many are interested in the more aggresive unit? If there are enough folks - ten - then I could do a run as is while I fine tune the sound on the system to make it quiet.

Start a list, and I will build it. Otherwise, you will have to wait until I am happy with it, and thoe of you who know me know that I am hard to please!

Hope that helps!
Randy

I'm sure people are going to want sound clips. I know I sure do. If it wouldn't be too much trouble...

What would the price be for the louder version??
Also, when you were out at laguna seca, the tips were two different colors..like the heat or extra flow or whatever discolored one of the tips. Can we expect this to happen on the product we would recieve?

So the more aggressive version is as loud as the Borla Sport right now? Yea soundbytes would definetly help since we haven't had one since the original prototype on SpiderX's car.

We have solved that problem by adding the resonance chamber. If you look at the picture posted in this thread, both tips come from the same tube, in turn allowing exhaust flow through both tips when open and closed. In the old design, each tip was separate (one for the open side, one for the closed), which is why each one was a different color.

I have been running the system for about a week now, and I personally love it. I had a magnaflow a little while back, and it’s comparable to that sound wise. Right now, it drones like a banshee at certain rpms (so does the magnaflow), so I can see why Randy wants it quieter. Also, with those of you with headers, it would most likely be overwhelming for the street. The note is awesome with 3" though. Under load, you can hear the gasses just screaming out of the tips. It’s a really neat sound.

I believe at this point, we do have the capability to create a Milltek quiet exhaust, but the thing holding us back is money. Both on our investment side, and the customers. We want to bring the exhaust to market in the $800-$900 range, but with the quality of materials we are using now, its going to be hard to do. I have given the idea of using a less expensive stainless, a thinner wall on the tubing, and a few other ideas to cut down the cost. But rest assure, we ARE working on this.

I will work on getting a sound clip to you guys this week.

If the possibility of a quieter system is only a few months away, I would wait for that. If the quieter system is 6+ months away, put me on the list for one of the current builds. This is the only exhaust I want on my car.

Brian/Randy,

Why not make this the Extreme WMS Exhaust and the quieter one a Preferred (when you get it done)?

Also, what are the RPM's with the drone Brian? My "cruising" is done at 3000-3200 in 6th - have to get to the "real" twisties somehow....

Hey Doug,

The drone is unfortunatly at that specific RPM, which is why we are leary about releasing it.

Have you made a duplicate system in 2.5" to see if that gets rid of the drone? Just a thought. . .

We tested 2.5" piping on the original prototype(not spyderx's, his was the 3rd) and we didnt see the power we got from the 3". The 2.5" is quieter, but there are other systems out on the market with 2.5" piping.

2.5 would certainly get rid of the sound issue, but it unfortunately also gets rid of the power as well.

The system on Brian's car has no resonator - I'm sure a key in why the thing drones. The baffling can and will be changed though. That should control the sound - it just takes time.

The system will be done in a matter of weeks, not months. I am fully dedicated to getting this thing finished!

Hope that helps!
Randy

My personal vote is this: I want the product that Randy feels is the best thing on the market, period. The goal of this exhaust system is to have good performance with the quietness of the miltek, and awesome performance with a ton of noise available at the flip of a switch. I'm not too excited about an evil drone at hwy speeds... the car rides hard enough on long drives that the extra noise will prove "exhausting".

I put together the upcoming VA pulley party in hopes that the WMS Exhaust would be ready by then, but if Randy isn't happy with it yet, then I will wait.

Randy, I'm sure each version in the development of this project has become more and more expensive as it goes. I would take to heart that the original thread when Bob talked about the prototype was huge, and you have enough people waiting to make this worth your while. If it's not going to be right by the VA Pulley party, then I may find some other goodies to satisfy my upgrading needs. I'm sure we're all looking forward to results when you have it ready.

Exactly. The idea of the exhaust is to have good power (comparable to other systems) when the valve is closed and then ***** to the wall when it's open. It seems like Randy is just experimenting on how to keep the sound down (valve closed) and still get as much power as possible. This exhaust is definitely going to be sweet.

Just turn up your stereo dangit! Jeez people. I am personally looking for an exhaust that is as loud as the magnaflow, then i am going to put a header on it. But since they don't make the magnaflow anymore that would be kinda hard to do until this came along. Randy if you could get rid of the drone it would be the PERFECT system for me. Even if you can't though I still think I might be able to deal with it, with the valve closed. Are you planning on putting any markings on the tips when you are done?

OOOO man it's gettin closer!

Mikey

I'll wait, I like the idea of a Jekyll (quiet enough not to arouse suspicion from the local) and Hyde (power and noise!!! Best of both worlds) exhaust Keep us updated!!

One option for those Magnaflow wanna-be buyers, ask a local custom exhaust shop if they can get the cans and resonator and build a system for you. There is a shop here locally that will do just that for about $450. They have done 4 such systems so far and the sound is awsome. No SS, but we don't have a problem with rust around here. I have never had a system rust out on me (just a few cheap mufflers).
