Final Drive Install

Here is the mini at Helix for an overnight job. Eric sent some pics showing bits and pieces of the transmission. Perhaps not an overnight job, but we'll see!! This ought to improve acceleration a bit.

The new ratios are: 5:1 in 3,4,R
3.148:1 in 1,2,5,6

1st: 15.74
2nd: 8.24
3rd: 6.65
4th: 5.45
5th: 4.18
6th: 3.43

This can be compared to the standard ratios for the Getrag:

Final drive install

Hi, I am very interested in this modification so please post your impresions of the conversion when you get your Mini back on the road.
Can I ask is this the kit from Minisport in the UK?
I run a MCS in competition and find the gearing too high and would appreciate some feedback on your conversion.
Thanks

It is the MiniSport kit.

Yes, the car is fast. It's about to be faster!! We'll just see how fast we can go without the turbo and then see what's next...

Well, it's half way done, with the biggest ***** du jour being the removal of the gears from the spindles. We were able to use a puller for two of the three gears on the small spindle (3,4,R). The last one required a press and some creative placement of a 1973 Landrover Series truck belt pulley. (No we don't have any Landies leaking all over our shop but a buddy of mine has a cool LR business at www.skytoprover.com). Here's a shot of the stock spindle with the persistent gear along side the new, straight cut spindle.

Getting the spindles out of the box was made easier after removing the plastic oil channel at the top.

btw, here are the parts as they come from England. I guess that we will have them available shortly on our website...

I'll try to post a report when (if ) we ever get it back together.

That's so sweeet!

I love gear boxes!! Thanks so much for posting that Eric! Make sure you let us know how much quicker it is off the line!!!

On a side note, I need to get over to your shop and check it out since your only like 1.5 hours away.

Eric,

This may be the answer to a thread I started recently.

Please do let us know the results.

I'm starting to hear that old refrain, "Road Trip, Road Trip!"

If a 2004 MCS will go 43 mph in first gear,
a 2005 MCS will go 38.4 mph
and with these gears; a 2004 MCS will go 31.2 mph.

What RPM and tire size are you using for the calculations?

Heck, I wouldn't need my lightweight Kosei K1-TS 15x7 wheels and low profile tires (rolling radius of 22.9 vs. 24.4 @ stock). That'd drop these top speeds in each gear by another 6% ...

Might make it too low to stay in 2nd on some auto-x courses though.

I believe that the 2004 speeds are at the stock reline.

Close ratio?

I do apologize for my ignorance - are these still considered close ratio?

Please fill me in...I'm having trouble finding traction in first gear as it is with my 03. Why are you guys trying to lower it even more? Wouldn't shifting more (ie, coasting) cost you more time?

All I know is when I get in an 05 or 06, I want that kinda pick-up, but with my existing mods.

Can't say I have a traction problem as I'm not dropping the clutch. Of course the Quaife may help...

I suppose if they're talking about everyday driving (less than 3000rpm shifts) with a near stock Mini, this could be useful.

in the 1/4, if your rig is just able to pull 91mph (typical for a lightly modded mid 14 sec car) you will be topping out in third right at the line with stock '04 gears, debating whether to have shifted into 4th.

with the Savage gearing you will be well into 4th

True. And that would be great on the track where you have hot race tires with tons of grip. But for the street, wouldn't going WOT with lower ratio just mean you'll be wondering when your 1st/2nd gear is going to hook up?

MSFITOY,
It's all about acceleration. Gearing is one of the main factors in determining acceleration. If you put your modded out mini next to a lesser modded 05, you might be very surprised. You may have to spray it much faster than you think.

Gearing makes engine peak torque much less relevant. The amount of horsepower and torque at the flywheel is use not very useful in determining acceleration. Acceleration is determined by wheel torque... gripping power. Gearing can multiply peak torque and horsepower to the wheel to any determined amount. The limit would be the size of the gear being able to fit the transmission. So, even though the top speed appears to go down, you can get there much faster by using gearing that allows you to operate the engine through the most powerful part of it's power band and deliver the most torque to the wheels in an efficient manner. Straight cut gear are more efficient, but whine a little.

I don't think you'd have to wonder when 1st and @nd would hook up... it's going to happen right away.
