Drivetrain Crankshaft Pulley = really Bad idea...
None here, 85k...why are people still debating this?
I do not have an answer for that. I used to have a lightened CS pulley. A friend needed in an emergency situation so I then went back to the OEM CS pulley. I did not have any problems with the lightned CS pulley though it was not on for too long. I did have a problem with the OEM one as it failed leading me to purchase the MUCH cheaper lightned CS pulley.
I was just wondering if anyone has had this major lightned CS pulley failure so many fear. I guess I would rather be safe than sorry.

just to add i've had one for at least 70k miles, no problems. the ones that did have probs had very high redlines (8k or so) and it was the oil pumps that blew up. like what has been said, this is a dead issue on minis. the first post that started this was on an inline-6 bmw. the mini does not need a dampened/weighted pulley.
I don't think our cars could run without a crank pulley. I have one & I feel it keeps the belt from falling off. My MINI came equipped with it.
Sorry forgot my meds this morning...

The issue that should be in question is whether or not your factory dampened pulley is going to fail. Ive read more about stock pulley failure (splitting and fragmenting) than catastrophic engine failure due to an aftermarket pulley
True!!! Knock on wood, but I've got 60k+ on mine and no problems. I have heard more about the OEM pulley failing than an aftermarket one.

The unfortunate thing about the aforementioned issue is there is really no way to test for it... I have removed my Alta 2% due to rattling from belt/tensioner. I plan on ordering the fluidamper that has just been released to solve both problems :D
Are you sure your tensioner just doesn't need to be changed? Mine was making noises before I even put the light weight pulley on.Engine is out of the car right now so I finally going to change the tensioner.
BUT....
Ivan may be right. The likelihood that the tensioner has taken or will take a big crap is the more likely culprit for the noise. Again hit up our tech dept. tech@ALTAPerformance.com or call 503-693-1702 so we can help further!
Well, I've made my decision after reading thru this whole thread! My stock crank pulley blew up last weekend leaving us stranded out of town. I will be replacing it with a cheaper non-dampened pulley which will save me around $300.
Thanks to everyone for input on this thread! I'd rather have a solid pulley than have this rubber damper, over-priced garbage leave me stranded again.

Yeah, serious garbage engineering that it didn't last 350,000mi... Cause you know an aftermarket piece is good for 500kmi...
glad you stayed stock and weren't swayed by the hype.
Stock is fine, trying to say an aftermarket pulleys are somehow better is like saying an aftermarket door is better, they're mostly identical and arguably no one would be able to tell the difference in daily use.

I had a lighweight crank pulley on my '05 Sunfire (2.2 Ecotec) for 96000km (4 years) of hard beating (over 200 runs on 1/4 mile track) and never had a single issue! I'm not even worried about putting one on my Mini!
