Thinking of getting a 15% pulley on my MCS

My question is if I should wait till my warranty ends to do it, which is about 2-3 yrs at my rate.

And how much more power are we talking about when you add this mod?

thanks

Skip the 15% and go straight to the 19%. If you do the pulley, eventually you'll wish that you had.

VVV,

did you run the 19% by itself for a while, or did you go right to the injectors & GAIC? If by itself, what was it like? Any roughness or issues? I won't be taking the car, maybe a few autoX runs here & there....

Helix did your work, right?

I'm planning mods for the car i haven't even ordered yet!

thanks!

Edit: You answer all my questions here:

Me too, but I'm waiting to see how the '05 belt tensioner issues sort themselves out. Then I'll be visiting Randy's shop for an install!

Do you have a link to where this is being discussed? I haven't heard anything about this...

Yep. Here it is ...

In some cases, getting it taken care of is more difficult if the pulley has been changed.

I just did the 15% with the ALTA intake and this past weekend, and my ride FLIES. It's a whole different car now.

I looked into the pros and cons with the different pulleys, and read everything on webbmotorsports.com and decided to listen to Randy Webb with the 15%. He's never had an issue with the 15% pulley upgrade. Sure, some guys have done more with the 16, 17, 19 and now with the lightened flywheel...but I was looking for a dramatic upgrade that had the least amount of risk with respect to the longevity of the engine.

I still have not had a chance to really see what my car can do...I usually have to stop in the middle of my climb in third because I've run out of open road and have caught up with the "regular cars"

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 15% pulley, I'm not!

I had my parts installed at Eurostyles East in Pittsburgh. They are a NAM vendor that I highly recommend: fast, reasonably priced, great customer service.

why not 19% plus 4% crank? why stop there?

In fact, I keep reading about 15, 17, 19 plus cranks whatever. Why is 19 the limit? Why not just get some beefed up SC and go higher? Doesn't anyone make them? just wondering?

Is there like some "phsyics" limit here or is just a mechanical limit?

15% does a good job, no issues with tensioners. It will also lead to CAI, exhausts, plugs, wires, larger intercoolers, Unichips etc. etc. Oh, the insanity.

Yes there are "physics limits". A good layman's picture would be a boat prop - at a slow speed it pushes water, spun too fast it just churns water and air with less forward thrust (cavitation). The other thing that happens is as you compress the air more, it becomes hotter. The hotter air screws up several things: engine temperature and air/fuel ratio for example.

The MCS s/c is an Eaton M45, the smallest automotive s/c they make. The next size up is the Eaton M62. If you go here, it looks the same dimension, but does flow more air, 1.0 L/rev as opposed to 0.75 L/rev.

Ahh, one of those laws of thermodynamics. Kind of like the questions is Hell endothermic or exothermic? Got it. But still, cool it down ... then what?

Do it..... I finally had mine done by the master himself, Randy Webb, just this past weekend at Bimmer's Clinic... and it was worth the wait... I've been on the fence about the pulley since I got my 05 MCS last year... in fact, I've attended a couple of pulley parties with Randy and he always rides me for waiting... well, the wait is over and it is just fantastic.... the added HP is really noticeable but what gets me is the increase in torgue in the lower rpms.... with the gas prices as they are, it's been a very costly mod to maintain

Go for it. You'll wonder what took you so long. Plus, it's fun dusting other unmodded MINI's Seriously, it's the torque that makes it so nice to drive.

You can do it!!!

My 15% went on at 5k miles and my parents barely waited for the break in period to end on theirs before they added a 15% along w/ a H-sport rear bar. Have fun

I posted the wrong link earlier regarding pulley tensioner problems. Sorry folks, this one is more to the point.

It's also a design spec issue. At 19% you're over the blower redline when you're at the engine redline. Maybe it'll hold:smile: , maybe it won't.
Lot's of threads on that if you do a search.

I'm holding off for now - the MINI is pretty quick stock and I've got other toys to play with. My old miata, on the other hand, was dog slow - I put an M45 on it in the first few months.
But hey, more fast is more fun, if you don't fret warrantee issues.
